Believe it or not, I can actually draw

:iconillastrat:
illastrat Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2013  Professional Traditional Artist
I know you guys are going to take this post to a unhappy place but I will say...just because i paint a certain way (by choice) doesn't mean i can not draw. For the last two weeks i have been drawing so that i can show i am close to mastery. I don't understand how people get it confused. Drawing is the most captivating art form over music, litature, photography and even painting. I know it is mystified because so little people can do it well. My drawings are flawed but I am good.

Drawing is the most captivating art form over music,
Wrong.
litature,
Wrong x2.
photography
Wrong x3.
and even painting.
Wrong x4.

Quad fail.

I know it is mystified because so little people can do it well.
Yeah, little people can do it well. But then again, there's a few people that can master a medium, so your argument doesn't really have any solid ground.

The difference between you and this person is they didn't create a thread about how well they can you. Your thumb war means nothing.

Goddamn they're a surprising amount of assholes in your comments section. You think a community of artists, people who share a common interest would be able to show a bit more respect. I'm disgusted.

Your art is pretty damn good to be true.

That illastrat uses a photo-manip mocking him as his own new avatar further convinces me that this guy is not serious.

Maybe drawing is the highest form of art to you, but it's certainly not the absolute highest form. Personally, I think that science is the highest form of art. But to others the highest might be music, or literature, or sculpting, or math. You can't just say that one form is the highest. There might really be a true highest form but we wont know that without careful analysis and a lot of time.

On another note, yeah, you can draw well, but holy shit do you need a lesson in manners. Every time I see one of your posts I've tried to be patient and kind, but it's come to the point when I kind of want to mess with you just for the kicks and giggles, because you seem like one of those people whose massive ego would be fun to exploit. But so many people are already doing so that I'm hesitant to join in for fear of beating a dead horse.

o rly...and tell me how its not okay for me to say drawing it the highest but okay for you to say science is...which is not even an art form btw?

Science and math can be art forms if you look into them deeply enough. And I didn't say that it was the absolute highest form. I said it was the highest form for me, just like drawing is the highest form for you. I don't know what the true highest form is.

Music is equal to drawing and other forms of art, sometimes even better. So, I practically punched the wall when you said that drawing is better than other art.
When I'm sick, or my iritis is acting up and I can't see, or when people are bullying me, or when I feel depressed, music makes me feel better, and I know others who are the same way.
Literature is a form of art that is one of the most thought provoking. It improves intelligence and teaches just as much or more than a drawing.
Photography captures true moments and beautiful things exactly as they are, visually. It is also an art form.
Painting is expressing emotion, expressing events, expressing moments that are often beautiful, sad, happy, and thought provoking, and doing so in a very skilled and beautiful manner.
And if drawing is better than all other arts, then theater isn't as good either? Theater expresses stories in a way that makes them seem almost alive. You can't replace a Shakespeare comedy or a Broadway musical with a drawing.
You can't place one art form over another. It just doesn't make sense. And drawing doesn't make someone better than an author or a painter.
My rant for the day.

Except you said Literature and Music, which aren't visual arts. (I suppose Typography might be considered visual, but that's not quite literature.) It certainly is not evident.

Thanks. It probably took a few minutes longer to color the background blue in photoshop and to color and highlight the eyes. Cross hatching is pretty fast but circular shading is a lot slower. These took probably 10 hours for the sandals and 20 for the chocolates: [link] [link]

Nicely done, but far, far away from mastery.
Just thinking that way makes you a bad artist.
Art is dealing with constant, everlasting failure (some famous artist quote).

try it. its actually fun. THe only reason i taught myself the non-gesture fast drawing technique is because i prefer paint because it is quit but people like my drawings more. the key is using a graphite stick

:iconillastrat:

You need a graphite stick for the shading. THe pencils are for the microscopic nooks and crannies. But to substitute take one of your softest pencils and with a knife shave it so the tip is like 2 inches long, hold it parallel to the drawing surface and make thick lines for shading. This is key. Softer pencils make more expressive lines. But you might want to buy a graphite stick. They are KEY!
