Like other people have said, get payment up front. Don't let them pressure you into starting work until you receive the money.

I'm sorry dear, that sounds really horrible.

I'm always afraid of people doing that to me, so I tend to ask for payment first now and days. ;-;
Sorry that had to happen though, people change their minds and it makes it hard on others.

I don't think it's very kind for everyone in the forum to say that you're foolish--that doesn't help anything at all. Just give advice on how to not have this mistake next time.
But doing the half payment in the beginning, and half payment in the end is a good idea too.

indeed ; A; i've heard stories and I tried to be smart about it
but I shouldn't have let my guard down
long story short I derped~ it's okay - at least I learnt something
