The ART in deviantART should no longer be capitalized

:iconvertigoart:
The difference between ART and literature or photography or painting or digital manipulation or others is not a fine line. Definitions aside, why can't the members of this site post things that the general populace would consider art instead of what your cat considers art. I know this has been brought up time and time again, but it annoys the hell out of me and there is nothing anyone is going to do about it unless every REAL artist (paid or not) takes their ART elsewhere and leaves deviantART to the cell phone pics, the fan-art (not all fan-art is not art), the porn and the shite.

I am not saying that a budding artist should not post their work to get feedback, but be reasonable. Your picture of your cat on its back in black and white is not art. Your picture of yourself in the mirror where we can SEE THE PHONE YOUR ARE TAKING THE PIC WITH is not art. Your sex story about your favorite character from your favorite anime is not art. I could go on, but instead I will go work on my ART.

Hey, it's a public website. Anybody for the most experienced of artists to someone who only picked up a camera last week can join and post what they come up with. It you want to live in the rarefied air of high culture art, go somewhere else. Me, I'm going to stay down here. It's more colorful. And fun.

:icongetoutfrogplz: ConceptArt is just down the road, about a quarter mile. Don't mind the smell, that's just the scent of elitist douchebags. I'm sure you'll fit right in.

How to Lock a Thread
Did you post a thread that's being flooded with negative feedback? Thinking of deactivating because of it? Don't be so hasty! Why not lock up that bad boy instead? It's simple. Just follow these steps and your notifications will no longer rage like a bad case of herpes.

:bulletpink: Step 1: Go to the #help chat. [link]
:bulletpink: Step 2: There should be someone there on duty. Ask them to lock your thread.*
:bulletpink: Step 3: Wait.
:bulletpink: Step 4: The thread should now be locked, so you can move on with your life.
*Don't forget a link to the offending thread!

And now your thread is locked! Now, hopefully, you won't end up the subject of a call out thread. :)

How to Avoid Making Bad Threads
We all make bad threads at some point... It happens, and at least you can just lock them. It's best to learn from our mistakes however, because we can't just go around posting crap just because it can all be locked! So, here are some tips you might find useful.

:bulletyellow: Lurk moar. The complaints forum is admittedly a weird place. It's best to sit back and observe everyone before making any contributions.
:bulletyellow: Prepare to be trolled. Sometimes even in perfectly legit threads, you'll get people who want to push your buttons. Just accept it and play along – you might be able to share the humor.
:bulletyellow: “We are not your personal army”. As annoying as some people might be, we unfortunately do not offer any Internet mercenary services.
:bulletyellow: On that note, we're also not doctors, so you'll need to consult WebMD on any butthurt you may have.
:bulletyellow: Complaints about what art is and isn't are generally frowned upon. I think we all have out opinions about that topic, but bringing it up always ends up making you look like a hypocrite.

Any other questions can usually be answered by lurking or using the search function (but who the fuck uses that? :dummy:). In general, don't take this forum too seriously.

In other words, everyone's idea of what art is should be exactly the same as yours?

I completely agree and it makes me so happy to know that I'm not the only one who feels this way. I've only been on a few days and it's shocked me that the bulk of the "art" on deviantart is copies of someone else's work (either anime characters or photographs), stories from the school of 50 Shades of Grey, or snapshots that would be great for scrapbooks, but not art photography. Seems like another myspace that masks as an art site. I've seen some good works too, but so far I've been very disappointed in the level of quality.
