Soccer vs. Football

:iconcheribe:
You know, as someone who lives in the US., I see a lot of that 'Stupid Americans, calling football soccer 'n shit'

So it makes me think.

Why does no one ever look up this shit?

Honestly, why? If those who complain about it just took like, 3 seconds to type in "Why do Amerifags call football soccer?", they'd have the answer.

It's slang. For Association Football.

:iconwthplz: The English(and Americans too) created it so there could be a distinction between Gridiron Football(NFL/Rugby/etc) and regular Football aka Association football.

:icondoublefacepalmplz:

INB4: THERE ARE PEOPLE IN AMERICA THAT ACTUALLY THINK IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE CALLED SOCCER!

The internet can be used for more than porn people! Why not use it! :crying:

You are correct on soccer. But it is weird that Americans keep using the Oxford -er for this world in particular. They don't use it for anything else, for example they don't call rugby "rugger".
But if Americans want to keep using such and archaic name that is their problem. I will keep calling their game handegg.

It's because handegg shouldn't be called football in the first place, is why. :paranoid:

"Slang" generally implies that it's not exactly a technical or universal term. :unimpressed:

I mean, you could just as easily say we call it soccer because "soccer is slang for football." That answer just doesn't make any sense though because the question is essentially WHY that slang exists. I mean, once you explain that they did it to create distinctions between all the different sports that British and Americans play it makes sense why they did it, but then why not just say something like "over time, they adopted a great number of sports that could be referred to as football, so distinctions had to be made" instead?

Even so, this still doesn't counter or entirely explain the argument that the rest of the world has over us. I mean, why couldn't we just keep the name football, then call NFL style football soccer instead? To explain this you'd have to really dig your claws into the history of this trivial issue to learn the order in which said sports were introduced and how slang developed along with them. When in reality, when people ask WHY we call it soccer, they're really just trying to make an asshole point about us considering ourselves better than the rest of the world, when that really isn't the reason for it at all.
