So a friend and his partner asked me to do work for his non-profit. I had a set deadline of May 8th to get everything in, and got the poster and logo design in on May 8th. The individual had left out a lot of information, so I designed the poster and said I needed to have all the additional information by May 15th because my Photoshop trial was expiring, and one of my disks for my CS4 bundle was missing and Adobe said I needed to spend $400+ on the upgrade, which I couldn't afford at the time. I made it clear that I would have access to campus resources to complete everything. And literally, all I needed was a contact email, website address, and a few revised sentences that the individual wanted changed.
It was made clear that the stuff needed to be in by the 8th so that everything could be squared away ASAP. The changes I was going to make literally would have taken me 2 minutes to do, as I had the original files still saved as Photoshop files and could easily add in the contact info that I needed. The kid emails me on May 15th saying "I've been busy with finals and I haven't taken a look at it yet but I will soon".....excuse me, did you not read my last email?
Why was it that the individual waited until the last possible deadline to contact me, when he KNEW that I wouldn't have access to programs after that date? Something smells fishy.
What sucks is that we had a verbal agreement about my payment; $50. It's now almost a month later and I still have yet to be paid. Thank goodness that my university's student activities department is aware of this project, so I still have some hopes of getting paid for the several hours I spent rendering a logo and promotional poster for them.
I've emailed them both again asking for an update, and still nothing. Looks like now I'm going to have to threaten to contact the University and the person who was endorsing their project to get paid.
Seriously though, never fucking working without a contract ever again. I don't care if you're a friend, acquaintance, or stranger. I am getting an electronic or paper contract signed with the deadlines clearly stated on it.
I want my $50. I did the work, I deserve to be fucking paid.
