I have studied the "why" behind this issue and when it comes to reason and logic you can rarely have other paths. If two parties argue and they both use logic to explain their point of view usually, one is wrong and the other one is right. In this case, I might be wrong, my logic might be wrong but I have yet to meet someone who can fully explain why he/she believes in what religion says (I'm referring to Orthodox/Catholic religion as these are the ones I have come in contact with the most).
I don't want to disrespect but I probably will, rational people who turn to religion are not rational at all. Logic and reason are based on the observed facts, religion is the opposite of it.
I don't want to say that religion is bad, people who use it as a mean of controlling the masses are bad. Religion has its purpose, in the same way as romanian "manele" have theirs. I just have a problem with people who fail to see the purpose or see a different purpose than I do but fail in bringing rational arguments to support their choice.
If there is an afterlife, I don't know if there will every be a scientific way to prove it. Or it will be so complicated that the masses won't understand anyway, such as string theory. It makes sense... but I don't get it.
What if we find a scientific way to prove god/allah/great spirit/flying spaghetti monster and the outcome would be beyond human comprehension? Then wat? The machine would have an answer, but trying to tell us that answer would be like teaching math to a sparrow. If we want to comprehend that answer, we'll need to ditch our limiting physical bodies, and that of defeats the purpose of the experiment... since abandoning your body means death (you can leave your body for a while, but you'd still be connected to it, and you can't halfass your way to the afterlife ) and you'd get the answer anyway.
I think... I actually agree with you. And because I'm oddly avoiding coloring a sketch I will attempt to make a (hopefully) logical response. xD (Why do I even lurk in this forum. x_X)
*Cough* If you ask any of my family why they are Christians they would probably give you a "because I was raised that way" or "how could the world exist without a higher being" type lame response. I don't believe in religion for the most part. Unfortunately I cannot tell my family I don't believe in God. I would be burned at the stake. Seriously. My family is that scary.
"Fyre, how can you not believe when your family does?" Simple, I think for myself. I merely religion a way to control how people think. Set morals for people and gives them guidelines to live by. Which is why there are laws. -Shrugs- I don't think that believing in God gives me a higher purpose.
I'm still amazed that you assholes who espouse "rational thinking" can be so goddamned ignorant as to think that whining on the internet will change anything.
