I see so many wonder art here on DA but very few take the time to say what size, type of paper and media they use. So what do you use and how do you decide what size to start your drawings or paintings?

I usually try to start as big as possible. I can always scale it down later, and it's good to have a lot of space to work with.

Generally, I use any kind of paper I can get my hands on, but I have a nice heavy-bound nature journal that works for pretty much everything.

TheGlome is right, i should try always to work bigger as possible. and on 300 dpi for sure.

For me, it really depends on the shape of the picture. If I wanted to do a portrait of a horses' head or something, I'd want something tall, and not square, for example...as for size, I usually go along with whatever I have laying around, unless I have a very specific idea in mind. ^^; 9x11 Bristol or 8x5 Watercolor paper. :3

I like big things so I rarely go smaller than 11"x14" but usually 30"x36" and I rarely have anything square

Well, see. That's just it. Everyone says something like as big as possible - but what is that? Billboard, 18x24 or 9x12? I can never guess what is a "as big as possible" for me to decide what size to start with....help.

Well... I use whatever will fit in my scanner. Regular computer paper. I don't feel right using huge pieces of paper....

When I draw digitally, I actually use huge pieces of paper. 1024x784 x3... or whatever the standard resolution is. I forgot. >_>;

Yeah. I just randomly pick a big size sometimes: 2000pix x 2000 or something.
Then I crop down. Digitally, you can always crop down or enlarge your canvas. So... yeah, that's why there is such a big difference for me.

I use: Computer paper
PSP 8

Well, it depends on the type of media you will be using, and if you will be scanning it or whatnot. Obviously, don't select anything a lot larger than your scanner ( unless you plan to have lots of empty spaces - you can just remove those parts of the paper with some scissors so it fits into the scanner, or fold the paper carefully. )

It's generally a bad idea to scan paintings - a carefully taken digital photo will usually suffice. I don't paint much, but a 18x24 sounds right to me. Just experiment a little until you find something you're comfortable with.

Ack! I forgot:
8 1/2 x 11 paper, or 9x12. *nods*

I work primarily on 9x12 paper and use standard size mats and frames, so most of my work is 8x10 matted to 11x14. I do some stuff smaller, 5x7 matted to 8x10. Why? For the shows I participate in, that's where I can set my prices at an acceptable level and still (usually) cover my expenses. In my figure drawing class and when drawing/painting just for the love of it, I go larger, usually 18x24 paper.
