I'm a hobbyist photographer (just starting) and I really want to try taking it seriously but first I need to get myself a better quality camera.
My budget is only £100- £150 though, which I know isn't enough for a really high quality camera, but I'm short of money in these hard times lol.
Which camera would people recommend just to get me nice clear pictures with a decent optical zoom to get me started?
I have seen a few Bridge cameras around which I was interested in and in my budget, but I'm open to any other models and types if people think they're decent.
Thanks in advance and sorry if theres other threads like this, I'm new to using forums
I have a bias towards the compact Sony cameras that have a Zeiss lens. The cameras are really well made and the glass is hands down the best in that class. I've gotten some amazing results for them, and they're in your budget.
If I were you and had someone who would give me good advice, I would go and buy a second hand 35mm film camera. If you want to learn photography good, and dig into it deeply, go get one film camera. It is a great way to learn how to be a better photographer, they are really cheap too. But you will be spending money on films and developing them. But not everyone loves old ways, so feel no pressure.
If you are looking at compact cameras, there is only one exception to the "no such thing as a best camera" rule. Canon makes the best digital compact caemras, followed closely by Sony. Nothing else is worth looking at. Everyone makes some kind of compact that will take good photos, but they will only last a few years. A Canon or a Sony, bought today, will still be taking photos for a long time to come. Most of the other manufacturer's compacts are just plain flimsey. Nikons feel solid, but they have an issue with the gears that extend the lens (a brittle plastic that sheds teeth like a cheap comb). Kodak's driving philosophy is now, and has always been "affordable photography for the masses." Their cameras have always reflected that -- they are built as cheaply as it is possible to make them -- (the only two exceptions were the Retina series and the Medallist, and those were a long time ago)
Seconded. My wife still has her old IXUS200 which she bought end of 2009, she's taken it everywhere and still uses it daily at work. It's a little scratched and beaten up now but still gives superb quality. I even borrow it sometimes when I can't be bothered to take my DSLR out! Last year she bought a Sony NEX-3 for slightly better quality but still insists on keeping the Canon pocket for quick and easy snapshots.
I started with a Nikon Coolpix S210. I was very happy with it, in my oppinion it does good pictures Eaven if I got a bigger camera now I still use it to take pictures anywhere, specialy coz is little and I can put it in my purse This is the only pic in my gallery I have that I took with it [link] (only edit on the picture is adjusted levels)
I bought mine in 2007, but now there is so many new models and better version of the Coolpix with a lot of improvements, I suggest you check them out. I payed for mine £80 at that time.
