Photoshopping your photo's

Hi everyone

I was wondering how many photographers use photoshop to change/correct their photo's.
So my questions to you are:

Do you use photoshop? and why do you or don't you use it?

i used to use Digital Photo Professional which came with my digital but i use Lightroom more frequently now. i try to stay relatively true to the photograph though. i've never liked the idea of Photoshop. i don't have anything against artists who use it, it's just that i don't feel comfortable doing a large amount of editing.

Fairly often - usually it is just fairly minor fix-upping of colors and contrast, and perhaps some layer magic too to selectively blur certain parts :D
I try to do it with taste, however - a guide rule for most of my edits is "if it can be clearly identified as a manipulation by a casual observer, then it is too much for a normal photograph".

I used photoshop occasionally back at school, nothing more than getting dust spots off of film though.

I do not use photoshop because

1. cannot afford photoshop
2. do not run an operating system that supports photoshop

Using photoshop correctly is the difference between a good 100 view shot and an amazing 10k view shot on DA.

I use it on every shot, and the more I learn the more I do to my photo's. The feedback I get from sites like this make it very clear to me, that when done correctly, PS can take your shots to the next level. My biggest hit on this site broke 10K views in 48 hrs of being posted, and its also the most PS work I have ever done to a shot.

This is not a coincidence. SOOC that shot is just a photo of some old stairs, I had to use PS and add drama to it in order to make it good art.

In modern views it seems that using photos straight from camera is as obsolete as Film photography: you can get some fantastic film shots if you put love and dedication into it, but the things you can do in photoshop (when done properly) enhance a photo so nicely that it's barely worth using anymore for something that seems more mediocre.

I don't have anything against photographers who only use photos straight from camera, but I think very highly of editing and the only times I've ever seen a photo that looked worse after editing was when the person still didn't know how to properly use photoshop.

Photoshop is for photo enhancing, not completely altering (unless you're doing a manipulation or didn't have enough resources for something), and I find that many photographers' unique styles are distinguished by their own editing techniques and use of photoshop, as well as the composition of their photos.

If I can help it at all I will not put any of my photos anywhere near a computer at all .

I do use Photoshop a lot and use it every day but only for product rendering and drawings etc .

Photoshop is a great program but it is not a magic program that can magically transform photos into works of art , fact is in mast cases in transforms works of art into rubbish.

Digital has not made photography any easier at all , its just made it a lot more complex and learning good digital photo editing techniques is just as hard as learning good dark room practices :)
