Of course i know thta this are two defrent cameras, but i have a bit of free time, and two cameras near me. So i made some photos to compare this two cameras. The result you can see in on my profile in the folder "canon vs nikon".
I was sure that the difrence would be bigger.

The lenses are Nikkor AF-S DX 18-200 mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED VR and Canon 18-200 mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S IS.

The photos were made in the nearly the same time, all on the "auto". I plan to do more of suh a photos, particularly in the evening and with high ISO, but i think that in the middle of the day, when we don't want to crop the photo the camera isn't the most important thing.

And what do you think about it?

I'm planning to upgrade soon... The Nikon is the better choice.

please notice that i compare outdated Nikon with new Canon, they are not in the same category:) for sure Canon is better, you can easyli see it in the secdond part of test - the photos with high ISO. Unfortunatelly i'm not able to do the test between for example Nikon d90 and Canon 60d, it would be much more informative, not only funny:) But a lot of people say that Nikon has more amazing colours, this is probably it, what you noticed on first part of test. But the colours of Canon are more true.

I noticed that Nikon seem to be slightly more "rich" in terms of colour, but heck just flip on the Landscape picture style on the Canon and it saturates more if you like that sort thing. It's also down to the lens as well, I have one lens that just drains colour like it's going out of fashion and another that retains far more true colour.

When you shoot on both, did you shoot to raw format and take the default conversion options or did you shoot straight to JPG? Curious as JPG is obviously going to be processed differently in each camera, whereas raw format can be tweaked as required later on.

i do photos in RAW format and then convert it to JPG. But it's only one thing which i changed. I had only one type of the leneses, but one is Nikkor and the second is Canon so the diffrence can be significant.

There will be quite a few Nikon owners who will vehemently argue their point. I'm buying a used Nikon D90... (And I've tried both cameras you mentioned) ... I liked the D90 better.

It would be a much more useful comparison if you were to set the cameras up in full manual and use the same ISO, shutter, aperture and white balance settings for each.

good idea:) i wanted to do something like that, but i had canon first time in my hands and only a little time, because canon is not my, but maybe today evening i will do more photos, on bad light, with high ISO and of course on manual settings:)

That would be much more informative, although I can imagine only a handful of situations in which I’d ever be inclined to shoot in dim light and try to compensate by overcranking the ISO.

Based on your tests, it would seem to me that the Canon would definitely be the better camera for an aspiring peeping tom. ;)
