I have a question for all of you really damn good photographers. I was taught that no matter the situation, always put your lens cap on after your done taking a photograph, and remove it when necessary. It just annoy's the hell out of me when I see people walking around with expensive canon's, or nikon' just walking around, without their lens cap on. Does this annoy you guys as much as it annoys me?

lens caps only belong on your lens when it is in a bag. When I am doing a shoot NONE of my lenses have the caps on, every single one is on the table face down with the rear cap sitting on top loosely so I can switch quickly. When in the field the lens on my camera never has a lens cap on it. If you are worried about damage just put a UV filter on your lens. (although I have stopped doing that too since it harms image quality). Id rather have to replace the odd lens due to accident than miss shots EVERY time I go out while I waste time taking off a cap.

Although tbh I have never had a lens get scratched when carrying it around. The closest I have had is when my strap failed one time and sent the whole camera face first into the concrete. But a cap wouldn't have saved the lens in that case, the whole thing was mangled and had to be sent to Nikon to have the internals replaced.

Because if I'm wandering around looking for a moment, that 2 seconds it could take to remove my cap could be the difference between getting and missing that shot, when it comes. It doesn't mean I'm not protecting my camera and lens - in fact, I'm probably most careful then - but I'm at the ready. You see my cap on when I'm no longer taking photos, but not between each shot when they may be happening every 1-5 minutes.

Maybe I should've specified more. I'm talking about when people are just lazing around, and obviously exposing their cameras lens to other people and dust and such.
