I have a question for all of you really damn good photographers. I was taught that no matter the situation, always put your lens cap on after your done taking a photograph, and remove it when necessary. It just annoy's the hell out of me when I see people walking around with expensive canon's, or nikon' just walking around, without their lens cap on. Does this annoy you guys as much as it annoys me?
I carry my camera and its bag/case together at all times. This past year I was involved with the Yearbook Committee so I ended up just leaving the cap off. But!, whenever I'm finished using my camera for the day, I keep it on :]
When it's in my bag, the caps on but when I'm shooting, no. I have a UV filter to protect it from dust, dirt, fingers etc so I don't risk harming the glass and I don't waste time with caps.
Agreed with most people here. I do one thing a little differently though. If I'm out shooting and I need to stash the camera for a bit, whether that be traversing difficult terrain or walking by some people whom I don't want peeking at my camera, I stuff it into my bag but keep the hood on. The hood will keep the front element from rubbing against anything inside and the material of my bag is not one that produces lint of any kind.
It's their camera. If they want to take a chance of messing up their optics, it's their problem. When I'm in the middle of a shoot, the cap is off. As soon as I am on the move, it is back on. The cap keeps my optics clean and dry in the field.
keeps the glass clean. So in the middle of a vigorous shoot you don't have to clean it and/or ruin pictures. Also running around, keeping all lenses cap'd and back cap'd makes them clean when you need to use them.
Your really not going to ruin the ultra-hard surface of a lens from what I understand.
that said, if you go to the beach there is no such thing as keeping your glass clean.
I totally get lens cap Tourette's when I see someone walking down the street (blurting 'Lens cap!' at people - not swearing at them). My wife's almost used to it now...
it depends on the situation. Because normally inless im using my camera its in my bag. So i only take the cap off when I'm about to take a picture. In the situation that I only it would cause me to miss shots. The cap stays off and the camera stays in my hands ready to shoot.
When it goes back in the bag, the caps go on rest of the time I have my filter rig fitted. One tip I was told, never put the lens caps in your pockets, they'll pick up lint and transfer to the lens! Not so bad on the front of the lens but on rear caps all that shit ends up inside the light box and onto the sensor.
