Photographing a Child

I have just reccently gotten hired (by my aunt) to take photos of her grandson (my cousin?). He is jsut turning a year old. She thinks I am a awesome photographer, but I have never taken pictures of anything and gotten paid for it before. I have also never taken pictures of little kids.

I decided we should go to the park. She wants some "action" shots and doesnt want him posing.

Any tips or help??? thanks! :)

short telephoto and stand back and don't grab his attention.

Just sit on the floor, and get to his level... you may need to sit there for a bit while he gets comfortable with you being there, but it will be worth the wait!

My advice: learn how to run fast and shoot

Either put him in the shade or have the sun behind him. Use a long focal length and/or a large aperture to separate him from the background. Use fill flash as needed. Don't even consider putting him on something where he may fall down from. Kids are easy. Make some funny noise to make them laugh and everything else is easy.
