In this thread, I am going to be talking about an aspect of DeviantArt that really bugs me. It's just, today I saw this pretty girl who uploads busty self portraits. But it's not the fact of her being revealing that it annoys me (Why would it?). But the fact that she has ~alot~ of watchers, favourites, and general recognition even though she just joined this week...
The only reason most of these people have a lot of recognition is because they have big breasts. But they put little to no effort in to create the image. Whereas people like me who put effort into their photography and have been on DA for ages and have got zilch recognition even from the countless hours spent on DA etc. (Not saying all of these people put no effort in, some you can see they really care for their work).
Anyway there is my moan for today, what are your opinions on this subject anyway?
Yep, would much rather look at boobs than your work.
The same could be said about yours, when you have out of focus and badly composed shots in your gallery, it doesn't look look like you put much effort into your photography. And do you have another account, because you haven't been here long (unless the reference to how long they've been on DA didn't include yourself).
Again, I am going to copy and paste this but. Thanks for your input. Also please tell me a few points on how to improve instead of just saying that my work is not too good. At least that way I can try and improve instead of not knowing what to do with your criticism.
I'd like to add to FallisPhoto's comment, by saying...
I personally think they're a bit harsh with you, but your gallery is lacking in general appeal.
I looked over your favorites as well. So, I'm going to give you some advice that helped me to improve dramatically. Try taking an active interest in other people's work, and learn to think with a more critical eye. Also, look at other people's favorites...find out who the people you admire admire.
Also, look in to famous photographers. Try to think "why are they famous?" and study them.
One of my favorite photographers is William Eggleston. He took many "snapshot" type photos, but he's famous - most well known for helping COLOR photography to gain acceptance in to the art world during the 1960s. [link] Look at his photos, and think "why are these good?" regardless of whether you like them or not.
Eggleston communicated ideas. He didn't just take a good photograph, he was expressing how he felt in an effective manner. The girls showing their tits are communicating, too.
As I've learned the hard way myself, it's never wise to quickly judge someone else's work. You will find yourself growing much quicker in your craft and as a person, if you look for something good in everything. Although, admittedly, I have found some things that I was really hard press to find anything likable.
Also, don't just study photos. Study paintings as well. Movies (especially ones from 1940 and 50s).
For inspiration, I recommend picking a book called THE PHOTO BOOK. It's got something like 100 famous photos in it, from Salvador Dali to photojournalism shots.
You've been told twice now that you need to work on your compositional skills and to focus the camera. Look up rules of composition in art on google and pay attention to what comes up. Look up rule of thirds and when to use it (assymetrical subjects). Look up leading lines. Look up when the best time of day is to shoot (the light is way too flat when you get too close to noon). It would help if you found something to shoot too. The backs of people's heads, photos of a baby sleeping, CAT photos... Shoot people doing things, not just walking away from you. If you have to shoot the baby, shoot him doing something, although baby photos, as a general rule, are only interesting to the people whose baby appears in the photos (that's usually true of formal portraits too -- the one in the photo and his/her relatives are the only ones who care). If you're not a teenage girl, the Wegman of cats or the guy who did the "hang in there" poster, best to just forget about cats.
"But they put little to no effort in to create the image."
It's not about the effort you put in, but about the final result.
"Whereas people like me who put effort into their photography and have been on DA for ages and have got zilch recognition even from the countless hours spent on DA etc."
It's still about the final result.
To be honest, most of your pictures are out of focus and badly composed. If I had the choice between that and boobs, I would most certainly pick the boobs because at least the topic would be interesting.
So instead of complaining that pictures with boobs get more views and more comments, work on your pictures, so you have something to compete with.
Ok, thanks for your input. Also please tell me a few points on how to improve instead of just saying that my work is not too good. At least that way I can try and improve instead of not knowing what to do with your criticism.
That's how unfortunately how the world works, sex sells. But yeah, I'd rather see a well composed, well lit photo, rather than just a random photo of boobs.
