So recently I purchased the Nikon D90 with the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses, so my camera is set up and I have not taken any shots with it yet because I can not get it to focus properly...I've tried using rings etc and pressing halfway down on the shoot button but the picture comes out blurry almost every time, never as sharp as I'd like them to be. I know this camera is capable so what am I doing wrong? I would rather set my camera up on manual settings so I can change them when necessary does anyone have recommened settings for wildlife? The Nikon D90 has more complex settings than my last camera and I am in a bit of a muddle finding out where to start... any advice would be much appreciated - thanks guys
Another possibility. Make sure the lens is firmly clicked into place when mounting. Also avoid accidently touching the lens release button (this was a big annoyance for me on the D7000 as it was very easy to do). If the lens is not quite firmly mounted due to either of these things, you can still take photos, but communication between camera and lens is impaired.
The cure on the D7000 is push the lens release button and partly untwist the lens then click it firmly back into place.
Recoat is probably accurate in that your lenses are set to manual focus. I also suggest reading that instruction manual from front to back. When I first got my D90 that is what I did. The first few times through, if memory serves, I didn't really get what they were talking about half the time but as you learn more you quickly get a grasp on the camera.
As for suggestions for wild-life. Shoot in lots of light. The 55-300mm lens is fairly slow and the D90 isn't a star with higher ISO settings so you are going to have to focus on capturing wildlife when there is plenty of light to make the exposure. But as a whole you have a decent set up and should be able to make some very nice exposures.
