Well my dears, I need to start thinking. The only thing I can possibly think of doing with my life is taking pictures of things :C And that's not so bad, is it? I just need some help because google isn't telling me what to search for :C
I want to find a lovely little photography school somewhere in Canada, preferably closer to Vancouver area with a program that includes instruction in everything all the settings on cameras and you know, the fundamentals I would expect a photography course, knowing how to use equipment, darkroom, in lighting and shadows etc, perception, photo-editing and maybe photomanipulating, working with models and people, as well as varying areas of photography (sports, food, fashion..) I do also have a good 2-3 years before I'd be going so LOL. I recently got jipped out of my language 11 and 12 courses which really really sucks for keeping a lot of doors open.
Other than that, tips and info would be really really cool. I'm looking career-wise, so getting noticed, dealing with people and where I should look for work, besides going on the internet and saying "GIVE ME MONEY I TAKE PICTURE." What I'd be looking at income-wise and if you could rate that on a scale of "Oh you'll be homeless" to "You'll afford a house after a while."
TL;DR: Do you know of a nice photography post-ed school I can attend in Canada? What does a life in photography look like?
Good forum, I am too looking for a nice photographing school based close to Vancouver. Hope this forum answers some of my questions too. You should check out The Vancouver Art Institutes, I went there recently and the school itself was beautiful inside, the classes also looked small and very well informative with the students.
Vanarts has a really good photography program. (Although it focuses completely on digital, no film or darkroom), it is a 50 week non-stop course oriented to learning digital technique as well as honing business skills related to photography. It is quite pricy though.
Income wise it more comes down to you. Photography is very very very hard to make a go of. About 85% of photographers either bankrupt or change industries within a year. (stat taken from a book by a fantastic fellow Vancouverite photographer named David Duchemin) Very few ever make huge coin. Most of the wealthiest photographers teach to earn most of their income. That said, there are very successful very wealthy photographers out there but as a rule even for those who's career takes off it means a lot of very long hours and hard work. Remember, you only spend about 20-30% of your time behind the camera, the rest is admin, sales, networking, marketing, etc. If you truly love photography then I see go for it and don't look back but odds are you will spend decades struggling just like most artistic careers.
If you would like to learn lots about the life of a pro photographer listen to Scott Bourne's "going pro" podcast, it has ended now but all the back episodes are still very relevant. [link]
Also I suggest watching the grid as it always has sensational info: [link]
