How to build a fan base?

How does one conceivably do this on dA?

I write somewhat decent stuff, but it's hard to get over 100 views on anything.

Fan base isn't the same as following. The former includes commitment to whatever world you've created, I think, while the latter is to your overall style.

i've been here 10 years and am hella active in the community and have the same "problem". you are one of millions here at this site and you're competing with the entire planet's worth of other things to do. be happy you get anything.

Join another art site where writing is the focus. Stay on DA too but people on here have the attention span of.. hey a butterfly! I'm hungry. What day is it..? Tuesday?

What do you suggest? I have a figment/authonomy account, but no one bothers to look at my stuff there either.

Write really good stuff.

And focus more on making friends than fans.

Would you say what I write counts as "really good stuff"?

I don't know. Shoot me a story if you like. (I don't like poetry :B) Keep in mind, if I'm not into it, it doesn't mean it's no good.

Do you comment, favorite and critique other literature? Do you network with other writers? If not, then you can't expect people to flock to your page and become fans if you're not actively going out and interacting with other people on this site.

I do to some extent. But it's rather sporadic.

You've been here for 7 months and that's all you've done. You've got to be much more active than that if you want to get a reader base built up. What sort of audience are you trying to attract? What's your target audience? Figure that out and decide how you advertise yourself on top of interacting with the community. What you're doing so far isn't going to cut it. You're going to have to devote much to the literature community than just a handful of comments and 3 favourites.

Alright. I'm trying to target the literature community, mostly through poetry.

So what do you suggest that I do?

Oh I didn't realize you were so inactive.

Join some writing groups that feature the kind of work you like. Read the stories that people submit and make LOTS of thoughtful comments and fave everything you like. Sometimes in the thumbshare forum, people request literature to read. Being active in the forums helps as well. Basically, if you want people to fave and comment on your stuff then you need to fave and comment on other peoples stuff 10x more. It's pretty give and take around here. Starts with giving.

Groups, commenting and favoriting poetry, talking to people.

That still feels too broad. How do I talk to someone? Go up to someone and say that their work is nice?

Go out and read other people's stuff and leave comments about the work. It doesn't have to be how awesome their work is. Give them opinions, give them criticism, tell them how you interpret their work. And don't just say something nice because you want them to follow you. Tell them the truth of what you think.

There are hundreds of writing groups on this site.

The reality is, literature doesn't get as much recognition on here.

And your profile says you have 7 deviations. One of them isn't literature.
