There has been some recent discussion from #hq about fan art and its presence on dA and even the main dA poll is asking whether fan art is part of an artists evolution. I think it is interesting to discuss it from the writing point of view also.
A lot of us who consider ourselves writers, don't really see literature and fanfiction as the same thing- yes it is both writing but where one is emerged from our own imagination, character and world building, fanfiction has some of that already provided. Is one easier than the other? Is Fanfiction a "step towards" literature, or does it stand equally?
Fanfiction is immensley popular on here, to the point where I think it dominates most literature miscats (There is a fanfic category: fanart>fanfiction!) but more so in general. The writers of fanfictions are dedicated to their cause and are passionate about what they are writing.
So where does it lie for you? What do you think about fanfiction? Is it just something to occupy teens or is there more to it? Is is beneath literature? Where does it lie for you?
For me, this is a bit of a tricky situation. I like both fan fiction and literature. I don't often write fan fiction, however sometimes I simply have to do it because I need to get my idea out there. Lately, fan fiction has been giving me some great self confidence in my ability to keep with a work of writing, and carry an idea through. I think it is a useful tool, that can also provide some entertainment.
I like both. I think they kind of stand as equals in my eyes. Original fiction is definitely all the author, but you can decide whatever happens in the story. You can write whatever you like without ruining any characters since they're technically the characters you want to write. For fanfiction, trying to keep to what's already there so you don't make the characters or story completely weird, but then you have a guideline and don't have to put as much thought into it as original fiction (Couldn't figure out how to say it right without making it sound offensive TT3TT).
I do both and I think I have an even amount of both though I prefer fanfiction at times.
I would like fanfiction if I could find good fanfics. I have been put off of fanfiction so much that I shy away from its folder here on dA.
See, I have absolutely no problem with using someone else's characters and plot lines to create something different, something new. In fact, it could be a creative challenge in a way. But what I don't like is a lot of fanfiction pushes the limits.
What I mean is, take HP fanfiction. There are lot of people who 'ship' Dramione. I find that absolutely ridiculous. To put those two together would mean to change their personalities entirely. If you're going to take the name of another popular series and their characters, you have to keep in mind that they're someone else's, not yours, and you can't just change their personalities as to fit your story. If you want to change them, make up your own characters.
Fanfiction isn't my cup of tea (I hate tea,) but I don't hate it at all. Honestly, if you want to take away from the pride of creating your own world with your own ideals when you write, it's up to you, but writing Fan Fiction is something I'd never consider doing.
I like to read and write both fanfiction and original fiction, but I prefer writing original fiction (I hope to get published someday). I think writing both fanfiction and original fiction each have advantages and disadvantages.
The advantage of fanfiction is that a lot of things are already established, so it's less work for you to create scenarios, but at the same time there are more rules you have to follow to stay within your chosen universe to make that fanfiction believable. On the other hand, you get more free reign with original fiction, but you have to create your universe from the ground up...well, at least in my case, where my stories are set on a future future-Earth (basically, the planet once was Earth, then it got renamed after the apocalypse, and then it got renamed again after another apocalypse a thousand years down the line. It's complicated.)
I think writing in another realm is much more difficult, I have to constantly look up stuff about Azeroth to make sure what I'm writing isn't inconsistent with the information that's already provided and could logically have happened I keep creating my own characters even when writing in other realms, too.
I consider fanfiction a hobby, and practice for my original fiction (that will most likely never be published). I also find fanfiction easier to write as some of the stuff is already there, and it's also fun to write about my favorite characters!
