As you may know, slam poetry grew in popularity during the last decade or so, and has since enjoyed steady activity and maybe even growth. Though I find most slam poets do little to no poetry on the stage (confessions of racial and social angst abound), I have found some poets that are utterly brilliant.
The purpose of this thread is to share the names of the slam poets you think are amazing. That is, the people who take poetry to the stage in a unique, true-to-the-art manner.
My two cents: Anis Mojgani.
Please share your discoveries, as I would love to hear your recommendations.
I'm not very familiar with slam poetry. I once had a workshop from a German slam poet, but I can't remember his name. And I think you'd like Sage Francis.
I also lovelovelove Andrea Gibson, Buddy Wakefield, Derrick Brown, Sarah Kay, and Carrie Rudzinski. I may be missing some. One thing that can sometimes get to me about Andrea Gibson is that she can be a tad preachy at times (you know, those kinds of poems that are the stereotypical, rather impersonal slam poems about racism, homosexuality, war, and what have you). But in most of her poems, she can take one of those controversial topics and handle it with some simple emblem of childhood or something else lighthearted AND MAKE IT WORK. And she's got a great way with words, saying things in ways I'd never think to say them. So when I hear one of her generic slam poems and some great lines in them, I'm just like jdjfjdjfjj you could have done so much more with this. Nevertheless, she is one of my favorites for the reason listed before. I'll list some of my many fave below with other works from other poets.
Some of my personal faves:
"How the Jellyfish Wishes" by Derrick Brown: [link] (can't find a good performance of this poem on YT, unfortunately).
"Church of the Broken Axe Handle" by Derrick Brown: [link]
"Human the Death Dance" by Buddy Wakefield: [link]
I've been on it since I read your first comment. It lead me to some other awesome stuff like Astronautalis, Sims and Sage Francis. Seriously thank you for that contribution.
