Forum Challenge- A story with no characters!

Hello all!

I haven't posted a writing challenge in a while so here is one!

The objective of this challenge is to write a piece of flash fiction that has no characters in it. We have a lot of people around the patch who rely heavily on a character to drive their stories and what this challenge will show that you can create a story without relying heavily on them.

Ideas would be to think about where else "character" can be found in a story. :)

Also- no animals!

Post your results here either as text or a deviation link. Word limit 300 words.

I MADE AN EFFORT

I maintain that readers become the character when they're moved through the scene, though, so I tried really hard to take out all the actions :P

Hah, awesome. Without being spoilery, I'd say that's the ideal way to avoid having animate objects in your piece.

Heh, thanks.

Might need to try this again, since my entry technically makes characters out of inanimate objects.

I'm not completely satisfied with it, but here it is.

Clawed City

Giant grates converged upon each other in a semicircle leaving only obscure squared holes to see through, imprisoning the dwellers in a small self-made island on the north side of Kalukula High Plains. It croaked and squealed as each piece of metal slid coarsely into the other. It was an ugly, strained mechanical contraption crafted roughly two centuries ago, imposed by the fighting of the five major cities around the High Plains. It had stood stoutly since and not one mate believed it would fail, even if maintaining the metalwork and the machine that drove it had always been a secondary thought to fighting for water, then to fighting for the sake of it then food and water and most recently the bizarre creatures that evolved in the High Plains, the Uncanny Country.
Another lot of mates had been formed to thread through the scorched plains in an effort to find a prosperous new land believing they would be triumphant where it was assumed the previous parties had failed. The cities’ patience had been filed down gradually over the decades of sporadic battle and ever growing resource concerns, and soon it would boil into uncontrollable sects of bubbles, frothing at the edges, all with their own vision for ruling the current incompetents.
As the last of the crunch of metal upon metal dimmed into the air above all that was left were the squelches of boot in sand, boot in sand, until they were far from the safety of the clawed city.
The bickering inside had stopped. There would be mock-silence for at least a week until a snapped figure jolted into action. Plots are easy to conspire and people aren’t always easy to control.
