Cosplay Ettiquette

I respect a good cosplay, and the Halloween that had just passed found me crossing paths with a Homestuck cosplayer dressed as Aradia Megido, and it was pretty good. So I let her know (I am loud) and gave her a hug and a hi five as I enjoy Homestuck as much as the next guy (Which is to say I am almost hopelessly fanatical XD). As she walked away I heard her say,

"Close enough."

oh dear, I felt I had called out a shy cosplayer as the wrong character and hurt their feelings even though it was a really good cosplay and I have little attention to detail (She could have been Damara, I didn't pay attention to the hair, just the spirally horns)

What I want to ask you is how one goes about approaching a cosplayer when you are unsure what character they are playing as.

How do you avoid this awkward situation?

Discuss.

Simply ask a cosplayer what they are, they don't expect everyone to recognize them. It's silly to think that everyone knows the cartoon/book/game/comic they're cosplaying.

Would say wow and just give lots of compliments. Sometimes they give hints or detail about who they are.

I think you can just ask them. It's not an insult, cos you may never have even heard of the show they are from. Or you could be like, "I love your costume. The character looks so familiar, but I can't remember their name."

It would be better than calling the wrong name huh?

If they look shy or not very confident especially. Some people might get upset that you don't recognise the costume, other people won't care.

What would you suggest if they looked especially unconfident?

If they look very not confident, then I think it would be fine too. Compliment them on the costume and then ask them what the character is. I'm sure they don't expect you to know every single character.

If your unsure just compliment them. No reason to ask or assume.

Okay.

Then just out of curiosity, what if you were curious what they were?

Just deal with being curious and move on LOL. But for real, maybe ask one of their friends or someone they are with.

Tell them you like their costume, and if you're uncertain, ask what character they are  I also don't randomly go up and hug people in costume, mostly because I wouldn't do that to a person that wasn't in costume... being in a costume doesn't automatically call for invading someone's personal space

Well I did say hi first XD

So just asking though?

Wouldn't that hurt their feelings if I didn't know?

I know it would make me feel like I was doing a crummy job if I made the costume.

I rather people ask what I am cosplaying over assuming what it is if they don't already know. Could be my personal sentiment, but I also don't expect people to know everything I'm dressed as.
