I never really gave it much thought when i first joined DA 8 years ago as i was never serious about art back them, just uploaded a few sketches and poetry as i hadn't found my genre of choice at that time.
I used my first name plus my favourite bands name, 8 years on still one of my favourite bands so i kept my name after the name change became available as music is still as relevant to me today and is as much as a love as baking and food photography is to me.
I think including your real name really helps people to connect with you, well it has with me anyway, most people refer to me as clare both new and old watches and those i have become very close to.
My nickname comes from my real name. My real name is Natascha. At school everyone shortened it to Nat or Natje. Since that name was already in use at many sites, I put an x before it (because I was a 13 year old and it was in fashion back then.. remember?) Now I am 20, I think it's a bit unprofessional. But I use this nickname everywhere because people recognize me this way. If I would change it, it would be to my real (full) name. Sadly enough you can't change it everywhere.
Can't go wrong with your actual name, or something close to it if your name is like, John Smith or something. Makes it easy to remember who you are, which is very important right now in the pro/semipro art world climate. It was astounding to see how many people here changed their old nicknames to their actual names after they allowed a change.
all my online names are derived from my real name (either my English or Chinese name) before, all my online accounts had ShiN J1N for a name, but then i got tired of it and changed it to I e u n e all except for my this DA account cause i couldn't change it anymore!
I made my current username and old avatar after ages thinking, I now wish I had never made it so long and confusing. But my recent usernames have been food related as they are easier to think of and remember, I'm the sort who uses unique usernames for everything I go on so not to put all eggs in one basket should anything happen to one account.
And I personally don't like sites that won't let you change your name at all, given if you can make a site then the code to add name changes is not hard to do. I personally never understood why deviantart wouldn't allow it untill recently.
If it is a Pokémon site, I use the nickname Kabutopzilla, a portmanteau of Kabutops (my favorite Pokémon) and Godzilla. I'm not that much into Godzilla anymore, but the name stuck and I think it sounds cool.
If the site has nothing to do with Pokémon, I use Ultimate Ridley, a reference to my favorite video game villain of all time, Ridley from the Metroid series, who has modifiers added to his name all the time (Mecha Ridley, Meta Ridley, Omega Ridley, Ridley X). I choose Ultimate because it wasn't used to modify his name yet.
Well, I chose this nickname because I was stupid and I didn't take this website seriously. But the name come from the anime that I really like and the numbers are just mixed from my birthday's year. It's too late to chnge it so I just get used to it.
I usually have a general screen name that people don't seem to pick often. (Usually because it involves my name) This account, however, is my second or third deviantart account, so I just went for something that resembled my name and sounded good.
I try to put forth effort into it, because if I don't, I end up regretting it I decided to use my name (Krissey) just to make it easier. You can find my names either KrisseyO or KrisseyMage on most websites I use (or my previous account name, Mangamageblue, which I hardly use anymore except for Pandora, Facebook and my Battle.net account).
I found this post in a google search... I was thinking of changing my nickname because I wanted a "less-embarassing-to-explain" nickname, also I wanted to start over, since I'll be working with digital art soon.
I want people to remember it easily and to recognize it when they see my artwork on other sites. But I also want the nickname to make sense for me, I came up with some ideas:
Zeta - the word Z in greek, the last on the alphabet, it is a sarcastic way to see my development as an artist, that I'll slowly get to Alpha (A)
Troffe / Troffan - I had the nickname idea while reading this post, is is EFFORT backwards, it would be a nice answer to when people ask "why do you have this nickname? how did you get that good?" =o and Troffan is a derivative
I really wanted to create Zeta, but the account name is already taken on dA... the same goes for "Relt" (which was the most original name I came up and it's the name of a character I created) =/ and the actual nickname (kisamekaulitz) is long and some people don't know how to pronounce it correctly... I tried to make people call me K.K but they never get it, they call me Kisa instead, and K.K still embarassing to explain What should I do??
An interesting choice of name, I especially like how each has an explanation and has had a fair deal of thought put in. I was about to ask what you would do with the more commonly used names (Zeta springs to mind, as you have also mentioned it being taken). Would you be satisfied with using the name, but adding on (risking that you might be mistaken with someone else) or would you rather find a completly new one? I have found that Short names are quite often taken, but it is hard to get a longer name that does not become too long. There's also names in certain languages which suggest you do certain art only, but can be far from the truth, do you think that could be problematic as well? As for you, perhaps try finding a short one, that has either a meaning or is composed of things that would. Something that means something to you and you can relate to and you feel that, time gone by, you will still be able to use it be it in a professional or a private sphere!
thanks for replying! yeah you're right, I chose "Zeta-Haru" it has a meaning to me and I think it's way more decent than this one, I could use it in a professional or private sphere like you said I wouldn't be happy to be mistaken with someone else or some cartoon character. This new name will allow me to start over, and try to get better and better quickly, since I won't be worrying about my nickname and the consequences anymore thanks!
Excellent. Yes, the problem with choosing one's favourite character to use as a name (or show) is because there are many people whose favourite character or show this can be, also it is less original. You are welcome and I am glad you have been able to find a new nickname that you are happy with!
I use this name quit a bit on some sites. I picked it because 'Trickster' is sort of like a mascot for me. Trickster is my own personal character and represents some aspects that I do have.
Also I just love tricksters in general like what you would hear about in many cultures. They're fascinating. They have foolish moments, but at the same time they are wise, and good teachers (whether by teaching others or learning from their mistakes).
I use ~ValentineBlacker for everything. Surprisingly, it is never taken. I stole it from a dead guy. I thought it was the most anime name ever. I also give it out as my ''''real name''' when it's asked for. Except Amazon, it knows my real name.
(I never use pet's names, although I have many well-named pets, because my main e-mail address is named after the dog. This dog is 12 and I'm starting to realize that sooner or later this email address is going to be really depressing.)
I've been using this name (or something relating to "Kizzie") for quite some time now (at least 8-9 years). It's just the name of a character I have and still draw on occasion It just became an alias for me, and I like the name
I picked my first username when I first started sharing my jewelry art here. I didn't have much of a personal style, but I had a vague idea of a soft/majestic/fantasy look, so I picked Mystic-Marbles because it sort of fit the mysterious fantasy theme, and it was an illiteration.
Since then, I've refined my style to be more spontaneous and magical and picked a black-with-white-accents color scheme for my website and branding.
I also came to realize that Mystic-Marbles sounds too much like "cutesy metaphysical talismans", so I changed my username to Starlit-Sorceress to reflect dark, elegant, magical look.
It was recently. I'm really glad dA finally allowed username changes. I found out when I changed my jewelry Facebook page that it's really hard to get your fans to move to your new account. I have over 90 fans on my old page, and less than 20 on my new page....no matter how many status updates I post on my old page saying "I've moved! You should check out my new page!"
Could it be that many have not yet seen or do they really not want to change? Though, I understand the problem. I do wish there was even more control over your account and things, but each site has its own rules, pros and cons so ..!
6 snakes; 5 are ball pythons, 1 is a fox snake. My current name "PokeSis" is a mash between Pokemon and Sister. I had a youtube channel 2 years ago where I opened pokemon card packs/tins/etc and recorded it, showing people what I got from packs. Sister is because I'm a sister to my younger bro, and older sis.
They are endangered here, the one I have is a 2-3 year old female. She eats pinky mice/rats frozen or live she likes both. She was a wild catch but I can't release her because she's too use to human care and I'm not 100% sure she'd survive in the wild, let alone find a place to hibernate before winter shows up. She's a lovely snake though.
I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. They actually are illegal to keep, but I wanted to get a male and breed them to help boost the area's population, I already spoke to some nature centers near me and they said it would be a great idea.
Hardly anyone uses the word mischievous anymore so I don't ever have a problem with getting my username. There is a few people that use Pooka but not with mischievous in front of it. And Pookas from myths are know to be mischievous. My friend tend to say I am a Pooka. I have this name for 5 years now and everyone at conventions do know me by this name. I have no plans of ever changing it.
'Rovanna' was a lord of the rings mary sue I made up in high school. But I liked the name and it's abstract and easy to pronounce, so I kept it. Personally, i would never name myself after a fandom/band etc that I liked, because it would make people think of that thing, and not me myself.
This is my artist name, as it is my name twisted into japanese pronunciations. As for forum names, I use appleseed(number) as it was the first time i watch the movie and then the first thing that came up when i registered for a website soon after. And now still sticking with it.
I name myself (Adjective)Kuki if the username Kuki is taken so I wouldn't have to have numbers in my name.
And on a rare occasion, I may have a really stupid nickname that I found from either a show or from my imagination(Like FlowerMonkey<-- not an actual account name just an example), but those are only used as substitute accounts.
