Why do you draw?

Just thought about it. And I wondered why other people started drawing.

For me it was comics/manga/cartoons and anime.

I love this fantastic world that could be created by putting pen to paper. I wanted to be a part of it more than anything. To me, it was a way to express my thoughts.

Writing never did it for me. I wanted to see their expressions. The characters I came up with, words just weren't enough. I needed those images. I wanted them to look back at me.

Not that I don't enjoy a good book I'm just better at reading them than I am at writing them. I was about 14 when i started really taking an interest in art I'd doodled before then but it never really stuck with me.

My first introduction to the world of Art were the Deadpool comics. Curiously I bought some tracing paper. I traced deadpool's image over and over again then I tried drawing it myself.

It was like a freaking supernova of all realizations when I realized I could do this. With practice and effort I could make these images in my head come to life. Just like comic book artists did.

Since then I haven't stopped. How much time I've spent on my art well... I'm sure rain forest conservationists hate me. I'm probably public enemy number one.

What about you? When and why did you start? What do you love most about being able to draw? Even if it's only stick figures, does it make you happy?

Even if you do it for a living, how does it make you feel to be able to create whole worlds and make them tangible?

I've always been drawing. Since I was little I drew a lot, same with some of my closest friends. And I stuck to it till now. I draw when I'm bored. When I'm inspired. When my brain is a mess and I need to express.

I usually don't do stories like you - even though I love comic (especially the style) and like mange. And I love books. I just have difficulties doing a character twice, from different angles etc. It's like dreams, I only see them ones - my artworks are my brains dumpfiles.

I had been admitted into an inpatient mental health facility, and there was a lot of downtime. I would draw and paint to pass the time, but it also became a great outlet for me. That was 8 years ago. I've been drawing and painting almost everyday since. :)

I used to be a writer (and I still am)
But over the years, I found out that writing has it's limits (in language, mainly. I just can't write good story's in English).
So to express my thoughts and feelings anyway, I decided to make art. As art isn't limited by language :)

For me art is sort of an ego thing. I still think the fantasy worlds inside my head are awesome, and I should share it with people XD

You're so awesome! XD I was never very good at writing stories. Better at drawing. I'm glad you don't feel limited anymore!

Oh... You have no idea how limited I feel.
I used to write story's ever since I was 6 years old, which made me able to basically write anything that pops up in my head. Writing is sort of the ultimate freedom for me, since I know how to control the medium. When I started art.... I didn't know a single thing about how to really portray things. As I'm getting more skilled, it's getting better, but I still feel like I lack a lot.

I'm sorry to hear that. Lack of skill is probably my biggest enemy right now. It's hard not to feel utterly powerless sometimes. That's usually when the block hits me in the face.

Same here. I still need to study a lot more, before I'm even the slightest bit close to the level I want to be on. But like everything that you have to learn, making progress is going terribly slow.

Yes but before you know it one day you'll find an old drawing or piece of writing and it'll shock you how far you've come. Happens to me all the time.
