Reusing poses

:iconbluewyrm:
This is not about tracing or using bases. For the purpose of this discussion, suppose you're completely redrawing the pose from scratch every time.

What's your opinion on artists who reuse pose/angle combinations? Granted, if you're trying to draw a sitting cat or whatever, there's a limited number of ways to do it, but some people might consider it a little off to reuse a pose you've done before. It might be of merit to use a visually pleasing yet still anatomically correct pose again, as it can be difficult to come up with something new for a specific occasion, especially if you have an idea you've used before on hand, but it might also be less 'original' for having copied your prior work.

Devious Comments

Depends on if said pose is suitable to the idea, or if the idea is being drawn around the one pose that the artist thinks they do well.

For example a pin-up artist is going to use the same poses over and over, because they are doing pin-up's and there are specific poses associated with that. But if someone always draws women with long skirts over their feet, because they are uncomfortable with their skill in drawing feet and legs, it is a way to get around actually working on skills, and that is a bad thing.

Acceptable, but unnecessary if you know your way around the human figure.

I think keeping a 'library' of poses you've done before in your head is good for general knowledge, but eventually the knowledge and understanding should take over to the point you just draw things to fit the need, and not try to create the scene around a memorized pose.

It's certainly a minus point for originality, but if the artist can come up with a clever and original composition/background, then I think it's acceptable.
