So I purchased some color pencils a little short of a week ago and while i'm trying to put some time into my routine to practice I thought I'd ask what are some good ways to practice learning to use color pencils

1. Always have freshly sharpened pencils.
2. Work from light to dark, meaning use different values of the same color. (example: color using light blue then gradually get to a darker blue)
3. Blend your colors. You can do this by layering (coloring on top of an existing color) or using a blending stump/stick or even some tissue.
4. Mix your colors. Don't be afraid to blend a light blue with pink or add in some green with yellow when you're laying down your colors. It can make your colors pop.
5. If you understand color theory, apply those methods and techniques.

wow how very detailed. it does seem like something i can try playing around with. I'm not opposed to the idea of blending colors and the like ;)

I'm not sure if anyone else said this, but don't use black to shade everything. You can use it, but mix it with other colors such as red or purple to darken a piece. Such as with human skin, use a darker red and maybe a bit of purple (depends on the lighting) to shade. I like to avoid using black too much with any colored pencil pieces I do (or anything really) as it can take away from the picture and make it more bland. That's just my opinion anyway and is by no means always the case.
Shade with another color instead of black is basically my point. I've seen beautifully done colored pencil pieces that were ruined by the shading.
Just practice different colors variations and shading, maybe just draw a little sphere and shade that however you like. Compare it to shading with black and see which you prefer.

Don't push too hard either, if you want something dark go over it a few times until it's the color you wanted, that way you can layer it and you don't scar the paper.

Enjoy your pencils! :D

thats actually a smart idea, keeping black to a minimum. I have played around with shading with different colors and while i have a general idea i think it can be pretty useful. i definitely want to play around with it. thanks for the advice ;)

You can use it for anything you feel like needs it. Accents or to darken areas that need a bit more. Make lines pop and whatnot :> just depends on what you want
