I work with the smallest Bamboo available but after seeing some talented artists work on the Cintiq i do feel they have an edge at producing better work and becoming better than their equal talents languishing with other smaller tablets....Is this true?? Something just makes me sad when i think about it....
Also Why the Heck is the Cintiq Priced over my entire fortune ??? Lol....And why is there no other company giving Wacom a run for their money?? They can send a Rover to mars but Artists still have to wait a 100 years to get an affordable tablet... Hmmmm...didnt know artists were sooo underated....Can DA please start a company to produce Tablets...LOL...(Imaginations of a Depraved Mind)
I use a small one aswell (A5) and i'm very pleased as regarding size. Actually never considerd a bigger one especially since my office is a kakophony of random stuff thrown all over. The small tablet fits nicely xP. Eventually i'm hoping that i'll move to a bigger one but i made a promise to myself that this will happen ONLY if my current art offer me the income needed for it
I know it does for me, but that's partly because I have a tiny tablet and a huge computer. The tablet I have is perfect if I want to rest it on my netbook's keyboard, but not so great in front of a 20" screen. That and it really restricts my range of motion -- its hard getting nice smooth lines when I keep running over the edge of the active area. It also doesn't help with my carpel tunnel issues.
There are some upsides, though. I can't imagine trying to balance some of the bigger tablets on my lap, or ever managing to work with the bigger cintiq. And as I said, it fits perfectly near perfectly on my netbook -- the only way it could fit better was if it was wireless.
I think it only makes a different because with a Cintique you are drawing directly on the screen. I have a smaller tablet, a Bamboo actually, and I don't think the size is that restrictive. Seeing as I'm primarily a traditional artist though, a Cintique would improve my art simply because I'm used to working directly on on the piece.
It depends a lot on your style of drawing too. If you are used to small controlled strokes, then a smaller tablet shouldn't matter much. If you use large sweeping strokes, then a larger tablet would be ideal.
I was a paper and pencil artist for many years and when I switched to digital art I bought a Wacom that was close to the same size as the paper I was used to drawing with.
The main reason i feel bigger is better is because of the Huge time saved zooming in and out....simply put its like drawing directly on paper......i learnt that it was 33% of an average artist's time. That's to say i can create a new work for every three that i do...recently i moved onto manga studio and was able to finish a comic page in half day complete with screen tones and dialogues....couple that with a powerful tablet and everybody like me has a chance to rocket their skills. I agree with the statement that it's the artist and not the tablet but that can't be the entirety of the statement. The hardware has a significant part to play...so significant that after noticing the jump in speed and quality of a friend, I'm beginning to think maybe we should give more credit to the instruments that help us. Working on a Cintiq i was amazed because i was able to get my idea's down faster and keep the speed up compared to so many other processes that creep in when you have a workflow that is made around all the disadvantages of the digital Medium....
Of course the tablet makes a difference, if not for how much you enjoy it. I dont think the cintiq necessarily the most important thing. I used to use a bamboo, but felt taht i couldnt really draw like i did normally because i usually use my entire arm. I switched to Intuos4 large and it made a huge impact. not on the actual skill level, but how much i enjoyed it (which made me draw more). I dont think you need to jump from bamboo to cintiq necessarily, the cintiq and the intuos series are basically the same except the screen. Accept the fact that you might not be as lucky as others and live with it, make the best of it^^
No, it's not true. The size of the tablet makes a difference, but it is not necessarily a case of bigger=better. It's a case of finding what is most comfortable for you.
Personally I have an A6 Graphire and I am starting to find it quite restrictive. However, I never liked working with the A4 size tablets at university because they were too big and I had to throw my arm all over the place in an unnatural way. For me, I think an A5 size workspace would be ideal.
I would love to have a Cintique too, but you have to remember that it is not magic. Owning one will not make you a better artist. People were producing phenomenal stuff with ordinary tablets long before Cintique came along, and people who produce phenomenal stuff with Cintiques can probably draw rings around you using a tiny Bamboo, too. It's not the tablet doing the work.
Actually, there is a cheaper alternative to Cintiq: [link]
I was using a small Genius at first. I switched to a large Intuos and yes I felt it was a huge improvement, however if you don't have a large computer desk it's just very impractical. Also, some people find the tablet surface is too big (my boyfriend, for example). I now work on 2 monitors so having a large tablet means a lot. However I used a medium Bamboo at work and it was just fine. I think most people would find this size perfect. When people ask what tablet to buy, I always emphasize to save up for the medium size. It's not that small is bad... I used it for 2 years and it worked fine for me... but medium is better.
I think after you have used to looking at the monitor while drawing on the tablet, it doesn't make any difference if it's Cintiq or other model. For a beginner Cintiq is definitely easier to use, but for us who have been using a regular tablet for 5+ years... I don't believe my productivity would improve by much.
