I've noticed over time that people will watch me draw, ask who the character is, and then get bored or impatient over my explanation.
I understand some people just generally aren't interested in fantasy stories, but it annoys me when a lot of people find out that the character I'm drawing isn't from a popular anime, manga, book, or television series, and then just all of a sudden aren't interested anymore. Or, they just sort of smile and nod to humor me. I've seen people here on DA with massively popular original characters, but no actual story written out about them.
What have you done to capture people's attention and make them excited about and interested in your original stories and characters?
people like things they can relate to. If it's all something you made up there's no connection to be made. I used to write stories when I was younger, then turned my ideas into films. Film is a much more graspable and universal medium. I'm not saying to abandon your ideas or anything, I'm saying to do what you love, regardless of what people think... and if you want people to respond, maybe you need to look at a new vehicle for your ideas.
Usually when I find OCs interesting is when they make me curious!
For example: I hate reference sheets and stuff, they are boring and they show us everything about your character. They're only useful when you have to make fanart! (so they are neccesary if you want fanart )
But I simply love when people make some situation-drawings with their OCs. <3 Letting the OCs' enviroenment, their reactions and interactions be so damn interesting that we want to know more! Don't show of your cool characters, but show us why they are cool! That makes people curious and if they are curious; Bam! You've cought them in your trap, Muwahaha! >:]
I know this is very subjective but hey, you asked for it
It's hard to get attention toward original art. Many here is for the fan arts after all.
But I think one thing that may help is to put a character in a setting in a picture, or in other word a world in theirs surounding. So basically make an whole illustration, than just a character standing there in nothingness. (though sometime that is fine too, don't get me wrong, but whole illustrations do get more attention I feel). Also try to show the character through the picture, like theirs attitude, maybe display a scene that happens in the story or something like this?. Sometime a picture can tell more in a shorter time, than reading below wall of text of info about a character, when the character don't show her/himself really in the picture itself. So what I'm saying, is that capture the main attention through the art itself, and people may get more curious and bother reading the story and such. (specially since this site is more based on visual).
1. Nobody reinvents the wheel. The creator of an OC is going to adopt various elements from preexisting OC's he is familiar with.
2. I think one needs some storytelling skills to make his OC to acquire a life of its own.
3. The best means of breaking the monotony of 'same pose' and ' same angle', the OC in question should be put into various situations and settings. Not to mention, the only way to make it evolve is to make it interact with other characters and its environment.
