Now, Now, before you get angry, that headline was just an eye catcher and I by no means made this to give myself an ego boost so please don't string me up and leave me for dead lol
BUT I do wonder how art that seems simple can be sold for millions. For example, read this article (Or you can just look at the picture and you get the idea)
I want to know what you guys think. What makes art like this be sold for millions? Are you upset by it? Are you interested in it? Does this piece make you think and say "Yup... definitely worth every penny"? Do you consider it art?
And again, Please, don't string me up because i'm not here to trash anyone or give myself an ego boost lol So please don't have any misunderstanding >...<
Make a name. Seriously we are at 2012 and you still wonder about such things? Make yourself popular by whatever means and you can piss on a canvas or sell your sweat on a bottle and people will buy it.
IF SOMEONE HAD THE MONEY AND BOUGHT IT ON THEIR OWN FREEWILL BECAUSE THEY GENUINELY WISH TO OWN IT WHO IS ANYONE TO SAY THEY HAVE BAD TASTE?! Like honestly, you'd think in the 21st century we'd just finally just let people LIKE stuff. It's the same thing as telling people who like punk rock that they're tone deaf or something.
We like things not because they are difficult to do, but we find them beautiful and touches us.
I do think it's art, but I totally get what you mean about questioning its success. It's somewhat infuriating that a really beautiful and intricate piece of art will be sold for the same price as something that wouldn't take me that long. I guess that simple stuff is more based on concept than technique.
It's completely about the context and what you can take from it as a viewer. I'm thinking that the conceptual and emotional values don't register as well over the internet as well as they do in real life.
Another thing worth considering is the expressive value of an art piece. is it communicating some kind of emotion? does it make the viewer feel something, possibly profound, when they view it? for example, Mark Rothko's paintings are very simple, usually just colour fields like this one [link] It might not look like much, but many people experience a strong emotional reaction to these works when they see them in person. some people even break down and cry. Then again... maybe the art world is just crazy!
The historical weight, the fact he's an established name, the compositional style and design, etc. I really like it, and it doesn't upset me at all that it sold for millions. I feel it deserved every penny and that it is art. Hell, it's beautiful to me.
As for the comments I saw about assistants - Sometimes it's just more time-efficient if the artist had people assisting in the creation process. Warhol did it with his 'Factory', hell, most of the time random strangers were taking part in the process. I find that to be a really awesome thing in art, the fact that anyone can take part in it and add their own little touches and bits of magic into it.
