I feel that it's important that we express our culture into the art we produce... But now a days it's ever so hard, cause we are influenced by everything around us. And suddenly we forget our origins
You should check out Yinka Shonibare's works. He's British Nigerian. He makes British Victorian styled dresses with 'African' fabrics, only really these fabrics were introduced to African via British traders and the fabrics were originally manufactured in the Dutch Indonesian colonies, however they are considered very 'African'. His works have a lot to say about history and culture.
Also don't be afraid to do research into your own culture, a lot of people these days act as if they were born with knowledge about their culture and history, but culture and history can only be passed down by education and teaching.
I think an artist who might be helpful for you to look at is Iona Rozeal Brown ([link]). IRB is an American artist who depicts the hardships of African and African descent communities through the lens of traditional Asian art.
From her site: "iona rozeal brown's most recent paintings are an unprecedented mixture of anonymous courtesans, geisha and other Japanese subjects. She explores the theme of afro-asiatic allegory, addressing the global influence of african american culture as fetish. brown's work signals the energy, critical direction and complexity of contemporary practice that is engaged in a tenuous marriage of commerce and resistance. "
She doesn't have a lot of artwork on her website, so here's a google search to give you more of an idea of what her artwork looks like: [link]
I think her work does a good job of illustrating the fact that you can "find your roots" and express who you are through any cultural lens, whether it's the culture all around you or a foreign culture you admire. Sometimes using the right cultural lens can enhance your artwork and intensify the message you're trying to convey rather than diminish it.
I hope that helped. I wish you well on your artistic soul-searching journey!
Culture would be narrowing anything down to any possessions, traditions or values that your country, people and family has that isn't recognized as much in most of the world anywhere else. That could be clothing, to the way people talk, or a type of dance even.
That would most-likely need to involve tracing to the roots, however. If you want to do modern culture, then just listen out for what the people around you or doing or are into. What kind of items do they carry with themselves? Do they hang out on the street, or go to more organized events like movies or concerts? What kind of work do the general people live off of?
Anything that you can associate your people with is pretty much a form of culture.
In my honest opinion, art should come from the "inside" - inside of the individual, rather than a society. There's a lot of ways of looking at it of course, but I think you should strive to show your culuture something different or original or uniquely yours rather than mirror its values.. that said, of course you're influenced by where you come from and your roots, you wouldn't be your if it were not for it - so I don't think you should worry about it too much because chances are your work's already subtley influenced by it, for the mere fact that you're the product of your surroundings (among other things). If that made any sense, yeah.
of course it did, everything you said made sense; I mean. I am influenced by my culture and that translates to the art I do. And I should keep in mind the my culture is constantly changing too
But now a days it's ever so hard, cause we are influenced by everything around us. And suddenly we forget our origins
