Backgrounds - any advice?

Can any one suggest some hints and tips on how to tackle backgrounds? I tend to avoid backgrounds but really want to improve and build confidence. I want to draw some streets with raining drizzle and some forest areas too (these are two scenes which I need to develop at the moment).

Does anyone know of good tutorials/books/hints and tips?

Work on perspective, 1, 2 and 3 point.

Draw backgroundy stuff. Buildings, rooms, furniture, trees, mountians, fences and anything else that occurs in the world that might be behind people.

You should look up speed paint tutorials. Here's this one [link]

Thank you very much - the tutorial is amazing and has answered my question regarding painting backgrounds digitally! I know what I want to do but I always find it hard to choose the colours for the environment. It's brilliant that the artist has added reassurance to not be worried about spoiling a piece.

Thank you very much again!

Read this comment to another fellow who asked a similar question: [link]

If you want to learn to draw streets, get out on the street with a sketchbook and practice drawing it.
If you want to draw a forest, go out in the forest and draw it. If you don't have a forest nearby, find nice photos and practice from them.
There are no tricks to draw "backgrounds". Backgrounds can be anything. You have to learn the basics, and one of the most important basics in environments is perspective (1 point, 2 point, 3 point, effects of atmosphere on the color etc.). All the light & shadow rules are the same as they are for figures.

I'm not really looking for tricks but rather would like to see different styles of drawing backgrounds. I understand and can draw from different perspectives and draw from my surroundings but when it comes to digitally painting backgrounds I'm a bit lost.

Look at what other people do and note what you like best? I mean, painting a "background" is the same as painting anything else.. you want the character and the background to be compatible, and not look like a collage.. so paint the background like you paint your characters then.

It might sound strange...but that never occurred to me.
It's possibly that's why my backgrounds never matched the characters as I have never considered drawing them both same way. Thank you, I've started on the piece I want to get finished and trying to get into the mindset.
