Too late to continue to learn?

Tick tock tick tock...the clock is constantly ticking....

I was an aspiring artist 4-5 years ago before I joined the military. And with priorities the military came first, I deployed many times for this country and have seen things no one will ever get to see. So for a long while and for some odd reason I have felt something has been missing in my life. I am now 23 and it seems that I want to begin drawing again...at this point in my life "although young yes I know" is it worth it to pick it up again? The answer I obvious I know...but I just need some motivation~

Yeah I guess it was my understanding...I kinda just assumed it was always younger artists who learned and what not. Now my eyes are open my goals are clear and I am practicing....every OTHER day...work/life only allows me that much xD

A lot of people start drawing in their late 40s, go for it

Its NEVER too late to learn! I actually knew a man who was a tallented drawer and joined the military like you and what he did was every chance he got while deployed was doodle his surroundings on a napkin or a scrap of paper or something not only to help him remember his experiences and the emotions behind them, but to also stay in practice.

Had some very interesting things show.

The biggest thing is I want to develop enough skill and draw out my personal experiences he way I saw them. The reason I am in such a rush...well time IS short sometimes even shorter than expected.

In my line of duty I am not allowed to say what exactly transpired when I played my tiny yet meaningful part in this war but I will be able to illustrate them with my own playful imagination (regardless of how solemn or tragic the events have been).

So am I motivated to get back into drawing? Of course I am! However it is my own lack of skill/experience in this field that seems to be bringing me down, this is quite overwhelming. But at the end of the day something to work for is what will make this truly an enjoyable meaningful and enjoyable experience esp when I can reflect, share, and portray my experiences.

If you're worried that there's some kind of time limit or deadline for learning those skills...there isn't, really. True, it's usually easier to grasp concepts and skills quickly when you're younger. Children are like little knowledge sponges, and teenagers make up for lack of experience with their energy and enthusiasm. But your brain never stops learning, and anyone can pick up new skills at any time. If there were a deadline, you wouldn't see as many people as you do going back to school and learning art...or any other skill, really.

Ask yourself, do I want to learn this? Then ask yourself what you would get out of learning it. I bet you will find all sorts of reasons. Focus on that and you'll find your motivation.

Slow down! Don't your grandkids need you to take them to the park? And then you've got to go to the senior center and... er.., well, you see where I'm going with this.

I'll keep this short and sweet:

I liked drawing since I was a kid. 2003, I just got busy and forgot about art overall. I rekindled my interest in it around 2nd half of 2009. I was 30. I got my wacom tablet Jan 2010 and has been self studying ever since. And I feel like I've gone so much further in my art in the last 2 years than the 10 or so years I spent 'doodling'.

Art is something that can be picked up at any age. If you're passionate about it, don't let anything stop you.

I like the short and sweet answer to things. I'm in the military so take no offense to any critique. But I feel I'm in the same boat.

What was the starting point in your self study? I will most likely take an arts class or two just to pass the time since I've been out of school and still enjoy a learning environment but that will be ways away until I actually move.

"What was the starting point in your self study?"
I have been RPing with a few friends of mine in Guild Wars for the last six years. Two years ago I decided to immortalize the story by making a graphic novel about it someday, but my artwork is not up to the standards on how I want it to look like. So that has been my main motivation. :)
