I'm sure every artist has experienced "Dry Spells" and "Artist Block" or times when you can't draw, paint ect... or do anything creative because you're stuck in a rut.
There have been days, weeks, months or even years when i've juts stoped having the inclination to do anything art related, and i couldn't even summon any effort to "doodle" on the side of notebook pages.
I've recently gotten inspiration back after a very long period of time,
what I want to know is, how does everyone else get that passion and inspiration to create back when it's been gone?
Honestly, I just put my pen to my sketchbook and start drawing without paying attention to what I'm doing. It doesn't ever look like anything in particular, though I have gotten a few fantastic abstract drawings this way. (I don't normally ever, ever set out to draw abstractly.) Or if I want to paint, I'll just art painting with no direction in mind. Just the act of drawing or painting makes me excited to do more. I'm never short on ideas though, just motivation.
I understand where you're coming from though. I normally go months without painting because I either don't have the time or inclination. It's really rare for me to consistently produce artwork... the times I was in actual art classes being the exception.
My art block comes from my skill not being able to keep up with my imagination. I try to draw whats in my head (even though some would say thats impossible to do 100%), and get disappointed when it doesn't turn out, which results in me banging my head into a wall artistically. After a few hours of that I usually give up for a couple of days.
Might sound a bit weird, but I always find inspiration by watching films and documentarys about other artists. One of the best examples of this is Exit Through the Gift Shop: ([link])
I must have watched it a dozen times, and always find it very a inspiring watch regarding journey and success in the art world. Give it a try!
I don't know, I don't think when I draw. I just focus on the details. I love portraits so every faces I see is inspiration to me. My photography sucks, so I use them as my stock so I can tweak them when I draw them. I have a line up now there are times where I can't produce anything. When I do, I stop working. I leave the drawing until I feel like doing it again, even if it takes a year. I would do something different while waiting for me to get back to the work. Then I look at the drawing again and I would have an idea to make it better then start again
