Is Style Made or Found?

As an artist continues drawing/painting, they eventually create habits and patterns that make their work distinguishable from other works.

Whether the habits are chosen for looking cool, adopted because they just work, or even slip in without the artist noticing, they all accumulate into an artists unique style.

Do you believe this is a conscious process of "Ooh look at that, I like that, I'll draw more like it", or an unconscious process that happens over time?

It's generally found through hours/months/years of drawing practice. Though, some people do borrow certain elements they like from other styles to build on top of their own style.

right, you develop your style through lots of practice and taking in lots of influence through reading comics or looking at illustrations.
it just takes time for your own individual style to bubble up to the surface. haha

It's both.

Major influences on my style include:

* people whose art I admire, and have spent time imitating
* looking at reality and trying to find my own ways to abstract it
* the tools I use - when I pull out a brush and ink instead of my usual Illustrator work, people tell me it looks like a completely different artist.
* stuff I happen to have a slight knack for
* stuff I used to be terrible at, and have deliberately practiced until I'm pretty damn good at them

Some of this happens without thinking. Some of it happens with a lot of thought.

One thing I'm working on currently is a collaboration with one of my favorite living comics artists. His work was a big influence on mine when I was a teen. Now it's a pretty interesting challenge to draw something that fits with his visual attitudes, but doesn't look like I'm aping him. Of course it helps that I've moved on to some other influences. And I've also pulled out some of the tricks he used to use that he doesn't any more.

Very interesting.

I had never even considered tools to change things, but now that I think about it that makes a pretty big difference.

Thank you :D

I developed my style by determining what I liked about the styles of artists I admire, and doing a bit of tweaking to fit my preferences and personality. I also like to experiment with style, occasionally. I usually work with a chalk-like lineless style, but for this piece ([link]) I tried to emulate the style of Chinese and sumi paintings. Experimenting with realism proportions can make for an interesting piece, too.

I agree whole heartedly.

Nice piece as well.

Simple tells a lot more of a story sometimes :3
