Hi Okay so im doing a oil painting for a wedding.... they want a very nice canvas painting that they can put in a frame.. they dont know if they want stretched, unstretched, or panel.... I do not know what to get.. They dont want it to be too thick so they can frame it..
What is a good website that sells canvas? (I get my small canvas panels locally at walmart because I dont paint all the time lol)
Also what is the best type of canvas for oil paint? (the texture and framing or non framing or whatever)
One more thing.... how much should I charge lol... I have never painted anything for anyone I usually just paint for myself.. I need money bad..
The canvases you can buy are all very decent. If they are too cheap the wooden frame will be too thin. Anything that has an inch and a half or so will do the trick for you. Dont forget to carefully hammer in the wedges to get the canvas properly stretched.
As for the price. You should have negotiated that beforehand. Even if youre good they will most probably not be prepared to pay much for a "hobby". Make clear how long you need to paint it, think to yourself what you would want an hour and double it. That will give you room for negtiations.
I like [link] for art stuff online. You could also try a local Michaels. They're usually expensive, but if you get one of the 40% off coupons they're not too bad.
If you're cheap you can always paint on Masonite. I've heard there's some concern with it warping, but if you get it properly framed it shouldn't be a problem. I personally prefer to paint on a non textured surface but it's best to go with what you're comfortable with.
How big is the painting? How long do you think it will take you to paint it? Try working out an hourly rate that you feel is fair (at least minimum) and then decide how many hours you think you'll spend on it. You can probably do a bit of a markup since they're likely inexperienced buyers (I see total crap go for absurd prices in local galleries because people are poor judges of quality). Also since it's a wedding people tend to blow stupid amounts of money on things.
It is going to be a 11x14.. I can paint it in about a week but since it is for a wedding i will spend longer on it perfecting it to a T... I dont like doing hourly rates with drawings or paintings.. I only do hourly with my photography business.. Thanks for the help!!
