I'm new to working with white clay (not sculpey!) so I wanted to ask the more experienced about something.
I plan on doing a wine bottle holder and I want to make it around the bottle itself. My question is, how should I prepare the bottle so the clay doesn't stick to the glass?
And another question, is it better to bake the white clay, or just paint it with acrylics and then cover it with acrylic polisher?
If it is polymer clay, as long as the lable and glue has been removed the clay will not stick to smooth glass.
If you are talking natrual fire in a kiln type of clays, you need to determine your shrinkage, and make the bottle holder a bit larger than the bottle.
If you are using air dry clay, it will also need to be make larger than the actual bottle, since air dry shrinks some as it drys. If you press it right up against the bottle, it will crack when drying.
if the white clay is still polymer clay...then, yes, you want to bake it. Some white clay is air-dry clay so it really depends on the kind.
Honestly, you're going to need space around the winebottle holder or you might not be able to fit it back in once it's cured. But perhaps use a cooking spray like pam? That way it won't stick, but also won't catch fire when you bake it.
