I would post this in job offers, but I'm not ready to pay yet, but basically...here's the thing.
How much does it generally cost to hire a Flash programmer per hour on a commercial project?
I don't really know any Flash game making script places, but I want to be able to create a Flash Hidden Object game, with 20-40 levels, all of which can be replayed once you've "unlocked" them. (Each level would have so many objects per level, and the object choices would rotate for each level so it's not the same thing.) So, it should "save" where the player is at, have a loading screen, and things of that nature.
Anyway, I just wanted to get an idea on how much something like this would cost, or if anyone knows where I could buy the source code, etc, or something of that nature. If anyone knows, please let me know. Thank you.
Well, for something like that, I think it might actually be good to try something yourself. If you have a good amount of free time, learning flash isn't too difficult, and you can create some cool stuff with it.
In terms of hiring somebody, usually flash developers work on a flat price basis for their projects, but if it is somebody you know has really good work ethic, then you can go for the hourly wage. I don't think something like this would cost very much though - the programming would be really easy, actually. The art may be a bit harder to get your hands on though (then again, you are an artist).
In any case, hidden object games aren't always the most successful of games because there are a lot out there, and they are simple. I did see one rather recently which DID do well though. It's called Memohuntress ([link]). It performed very successfully on the gaming sites Kongregate and Newgrounds. However, developing something on this scale would be really difficult... look at all the art, special effects, and videos and such that are in it... it'd take alot to do it successfully. Then again, this would be your first sort of project, so I'm not sure it needs to be perfectly successful (mine wasn't hehe).
In any case, level systems, saving features, etc are all really easy. It's more making your game stand out drastically that's difficult.
Best of Luck, and if you have any more questions, just ask. . -TAO
XD Well, I'm going for Game Art & Design, lol! So the art and all the animations and stuff I can do for myself easily enough.
As far as programming---not only am I almost legally blind, programming is one of those things that's just hard for me, like most reading things, aka black text on white due to my double vision. My brain skips all the time, and it's not really something I'm interested in. I've learned some stuff, and granted, sure, will I seek things out, yes? But truthfully, I all ready sought for something like this, and I haven't been able to find anything like it, soooooooooooooooooooooooo. Yea. lol.
I'm an artist. I also can't focus worth pie! Programming stresses me out far too much, and I all ready have enough on my plate with 3D modeling and textures and concept art and this and that that I just really don't think it's worth my time devoting to.
I'm actually looking at a very niche game---and yes, I know it's tons of work. I've made Flash games before. XD But what I'm actually thinking of, again, is quite specialized and targeted to a specific audience that loves games. I'm not really looking to make millions, but I want to put my skills together on a long term project for people to enjoy for a few dollars. I want something for my portfolio, and something that will also help me grow as an artist, and shine as an artist. Even if it was something as simple as 20 levels, I'd be happy. But, again, I don't have any knowledge, and I don't really know anyone who would do that type of project.
Well yeah, if programming isn't your thing, don't get into it; for some people, it's just not what they like to do at all. In that case, yeah, hire someone, and do the things you'd like to do .
What sort of niche inside of hidden object games are you thinking about? The Flash Game Market is really picky, so what are you planning to do?
The reason why I'm wondering is because it's really hard to earn even a few dollars in the market... especially because hidden object games rarely get sponsored. Ad-revenue doesn't really earn you very much money unless you get ALOT of views (My first game Got 6500 views, and earned roughly $4.75, over a third which was from Kongregate which has roughly 1000 views). So I mean, you can try it, but you probably aren't going to earn very much. If you hire a developer, it's probably going to cost more for hiring than you would earn through ads, unless you make a 50-50 split deal or something.
I'm not trying to discourage you, of course (getting things for a portfolio is really important), but yeah... there will be some knots that need to be worked out.
In any case, a good idea is to work out a game design document with somebody beforehand. This'll help, because while people will be reluctant to start a hidden object game, if you give them the details of what you are going to do with it (and what make it unique from other hidden object games), than they may be more willing to make it for you.
Best of luck with it, in any case. If you need more info, just ask (though it looks like you already know alot of stuff yourself).
Do you know what FA is? I'm assuming since you love cats, you've probably heard of animal like creatures with human features, right? Aka anthros or furries, right? I groweth in popularities!
Money really isn't an issue at this point in time, so I'm not really concerned about overall cost. And don't get me wrong; I realize there's plenty of competition, etc. After all, I'm almost done with my Bachelor's in Game Art & Design.
Again, this really isn't so much about money as it is simply is about building an enjoyable game within a certain niche. ^^ I all ready understand the concepts of markets, game documents, etc. That's something that I will be drafting up later when I'm ready. Right now, I'm simply looking at the best options for it, because I've been wanting to create one for a really long time. I.e., if hiring someone is better, or if it's something best done as a fun project between partners, or if there's any available scripts. I'm pretty much looking at my options.
Sooon, my pretties, sooooon. Soooon.
I wish I knew more about UDK, too. Again, I can do the basic functions, but programming? You might as well beat me in the head with a desk.
Ah, those, in any case. How are you going to relate that to a hidden object game, as in, is it just going to be a regular game with furries in it, or are you also going to introduce new mechanics relating to furries?
UDK... ah yes... that is a good enviroment, but I'd suspect the programming for that is pretty intense. Never tried something 3D myself...
If I wanted to make something like that, I would google "how to program in flash" and take it from there. With 20-40 levels, it sounds expensive to hire someone else to do it.
I've done a lot of searching on programming over the years, and hahaha, it's just not one of those things that I really just can do. We just aren't friends, and I'd rather buy a source of that nature, or heir someone. Thanks!
