To Draw or Not To Draw

This is a genuine question and I'm curious to know what people think.

When does drawing fan art cross the line into unbearable? At what point does it become a turn off for some people?

You see a lot of fanart. Some sites are soully devoted to nothing but. Is there a line that gets crossed at any time?

I drew fan art for years and while I drew it I had a lot of fun with it. But as years went but I just got a little bored of it because they were characters I've known for ages, and there's nothing new I could really add to the fanart side of things =w=" (everyone else got there first).

So I prefer my original characters because they've got some uniqueness to them (well, I think so at least), also no one else has drawn them so it's my own personal thing. :3

Don't get me wrong though, I will still draw a fanart from time to time because sometimes it's fun to do a little fanart! :dummy:

Can't argue with that. :D I feel the same way.

I never started with fan art. BUT I have drawn some fan related stuff, mostly for myself. I love letting my muse beat me about the head neck and shoulders with an interesting and original idea.

Although, she could stop doing it at 1 am in the morning...that would be nice.

I'm not sure what I originally started drawing (scribble people probably lol), but when I started to practice drawing more seriously, it was fanart. :P It's only in the past year or so I really tried to come up with an original story with characters of my own. :)

(Don't worry, I stay awake till ridiculous hours too ;) )

Fan art is a good way to collect a larger base of watchers. Then when an artist has a lot of watchers these watchers will be more open to viewing non-fanart then they would be if the artist started out with say a Web comic with completely new characters.

Interesting thought. Please bear with me. I'm not trying to be insulting, just posing a question.

What happens when the people watching the artist for fanart stop watching because the artist starts drawing originals?

They'll probably lose some watchers. If they still throw in some fan art here and there, then everyone can be happy.

If I were to draw fan art for fun, I'd have to feel something toward a character. Otherwise I wouldn't bother carrying through with it.

Commissions are a different story though. Those are important.

The only thing that kinda ticks me off is that when artists draw fan art because it's the current fad to get more views/attention. (e.g. fanart of new movies/series coming out). I see this a lot and it has become one of my pet peeves. It makes them look like a sellout to me sometimes.

I understand why this is done and don't fault these artists for doing so but I dont think it should be called fan art. More like fan service. There is a difference. As I said, this is a pet peeve of mine, doesn't have to be a rational thing that's really annoying/bad and I am probably the only one.

Oh yes the sexualization of those fairy tale characters.....It's a bit disturbing for me. I did fave some of them because I like the art style and I am old enough to look past that stuff. It's just the kid in me feels a little traumatized and cringe at the thought of my favorite disney characters looking like..p0rn stars lol.

Versus getting views because you know people are genuinely interested in the artist's work. I can see your point. Getting people interested in a new idea is much harder than keeping people interested in a popular one.

It makes finding an audience for new work, writing, poetry or what have you more challenging.

But, in the long run wouldn't it be better to know people are watching your art because they like your style and creativity? (Personally that would make me happier about my own work)

Probably a question for another forum topic. :)

God, I just had an image of Goofy and Donald p0rn. O_O That's scaring. Excuse me while I go pour gasoline over my brain and scrub with a wire brush. O_O
