i have some great colored pencils i just absolutely suck at blending. i know that with colored pencils and many other mediums you have to build the color layer by layer. i have tried tortillons for blending. Anyone with any great tips about colored pencil use?

Prismacolor softcore pencils are probably the best to use for blending. Add the layers together softly, and you can also use a colorless blending pencil.

like shinning in the darkness said use thick paper like card stock. Also make sure you layer the colors by laying down the first color then adding the second color, then going over the second color with the first color again. Keep doing that with every layer and you should bet a nice build up of color, make sure you press down a bit harder each time. Also use an eraser for highlights or to remove color when you've laid too much down. Try mixing markers and color pencils to, they tend to work really well together.

Yeah, I just layer them lightly until I get the intensity/colour mix I want. I'm not sure why you'd want to smear them, but if you're really keen on it you can try watercolour pencils or regular pencil crayons and a solvent. Still, at that point you have to ask yourself why you aren't just painting.

I wouldn't really call colored pencils as a "blending" medium. Maybe that's part of the problem.
