So...about them Pokeballs...

:iconthegrzymreaper:
I see them all the time of the front page, and I think, "Wow, they look good, and it's great that you're such a good artist, but enough is enough." When did this Pokeball fad begin, and why is it taking the front page where all the better art deserves to be? Like I said, some of them look really good, but the crossovers and such need to stop. I know this is probably going to turn into a discussion of "what's original vs. what's popular", but I don't exactly find the same stuff appearing on the front page to be refreshing. Which makes me wonder, if they're appearing on the front page of DeviantART, does that mean that most people really like them? Here I go again making unpopular opinions.

He's been around for months and I have to agree it's really annoying. Like months back when it the first time, I was like "Thats pretty cool" and I watched him. But everyday or every couples days he'd make another one and upload it and it would end up on the popular page and I'm then like "what the hell? There all the same thing...?" So I un watched him and now it's not even pokemon related anymore, its whatever stock he can shove into a pokeball. And it's getting on my nerves as well.
He also submits them constantly to a group I co found in and he won't stop submitting them since we don't accept un credited stock >_>

His mentality about that bothers me. It's pretty much "if the artist doesn't tell me I can't use it, then I can get away with it". The cross-overs bother me as well...is he doing it to try to get a larger audience? What is seeing anime characters from different fandoms in a pokeball supposed to do for me?

The Pokeball guy has been around for months, but this fad of same crap being on the front page has being going on for YEARS. Most of the time it's the artist's fanbase boosting them up, or even sometimes art will make the front page for all the comments, whether positive or negative, just because of the attention it's getting.

Yeah, it bothers me the most when the fanbase is like, "OMG, trollz! Oh noes they are smelly and stupid n meen!" ...Because most of the people who have a problem with what he does actually have valid reasons for it, while the fans brand them as brainless spam bots.

Indeed. I try to stay away from the front page and focus on groups more because of this.

I think it stems from the fact that it's related to Pokemon which already has a great fanbase. Pokeballs have just become another different form of fanart that people admire the way I see it, and the guy has become popular for producing a whole bunch of them. I understand how enough is enough, and I agree because it's mainly a product of manipulation of existing art that I don't really consider as something to give a lot of attention to; although I'd only probably give him credit for creating a new way of depicting pokeballs. I've also seen another reason why it's so popular from Tumblr - have you noticed how many groups it's been submitted to?

If people like it so much, I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be on the front page of popular. I personally am not bothered with them anymore, it's like a case of witnessing a crowd being a fan of something which I'm not. Once you have a taste of it and decide you don't like it, you just carry on.

It just bothers me that he can pop these things out in less than a day without putting forth any effort, and then receive more attention than those who I personally think deserved it. It's just photoshopping some stuff together. -_- There's usually more to it when it comes to photomanipulation, isn't there?

Yes; I guess people are just more generally affected by the overall impact of a visual deviation, without considering the artist's effort especially if it's fanart; maybe they think it's easy for them because it's what they do so know how to get things done efficiently.

It's also like...a confident person who can't sing but knows how to use it to his advantage to get people's attention without being obnoxious. He'll appear to sing his heart out, tell funny jokes like he's even going to have a concert soon. Being good at entertainment that can amuse a whole crowd even though it doesn't take you any effort at all.
Forgive this lame analogy ^^;

Anyway, so it's like the guy maybe has some bit of skill at photomanipulation (I mean not everyone can or knows unless you learn so that makes you unskilled at it till then), but nothing great that needs so much effort to some people as some others. But it's what he does that gets people's attention. He knows what they like and does some great fan service.

I think that's part of the story behind photomanipulation. There are many photomanipulators here on dA but they don't receive the same attention because their themes don't appeal to as many people as Pokemon does and those other characters from other fandoms...that somehow got inside..Pokeballs...

I asked the same thing on a very.... different forum. I never did get an answer, though.
But whatever the reason is, that pokeball-thing is just one of the many, many reasons I have my front page set to Popular - All Time.
