Just wanted to know what you guys think about artist who use bases to draw certain poses. You know those pixel ones we always see? I am not saying I am against it. Just that lately I have been seeing them more and more and idk if its fair to other artist who don't use them. So the real question is, is using bases fair or unfair to other artist who don't use it? (and especially since the ones who do use bases end up in front page) Opinions are appreciated just very curious about what others think c:
i would say it's fair. bases helped me a LOT starting out and it has helped me get better. now, i don't recommend you taking someone else's art as a base and then making your picture look exactly like your picture and said it's original. that's not fair and that's stealing. my friend use to do that with my pictures. i would let her borrow a picture of mine, she'd draw it, present it to me and the picture looked just like mine. but she was calling her picture original. no, using a base is just using a pose as reference and incorporating your characters in with the picture. your own thoughts, your own ideas, but with the same pose as the picture. it helped me a lot when i first started out. be honest with your pictures and you'll be fine.
you are right sometimes bases can be used as ref as long as you don't just draw hair and clothes on a base and call it your own. I understand what you are saying cuz thats who i started too I used pictures of real people instead lol to do the poses cuz i couldn't see it in my head clearly. Bases are good as ref too but some people don't so its what sucks in a way
yeah i try to be as original as i can. bases always help me out, idc how other people put it. bases just don't work for everybody though. it works perfectly fine for me.
I think it's okay if the person is a teenager, because they have a right to be goo goo over whatever derpy crap they want. They don't know any better. Otherwise, it's an okay hobby unless a significant amount of the person's self esteem hinges on getting asspats for playing with digital paperdolls and coloring books... then getting out more and a good hard look at themselves is in order in my opinion.
I don't really think of "fair to the original artist", because if they're making dolls and linearts for people to play with, it's not their trouble either way if people take that kind of thing way too seriously on the consumer-side.
Thats why i kind of see its not right that when they do use bases they get patted on a back and told good job when they should be encouraged to do their own thing and not use somebody else's work.
I guess I've just known too many people irl who are those kind of people who use bases for self-esteem purposes. And they usually have something pretty badly awry in their lives. An example is that one of the chicks I know who does this got stabbed thirty nine times by her boyfriend who then shot himself in the face. She survived, he didn't. She plays with bases and dolls and gets upset when nobody cares. She isn't well. It is not her fault. I'm pretty sure if she could draw well, she would draw all of the cute things you can imagine, and do it for the attention. However, that ship has sailed and all she has is other people's cute things.
A lot of people have things like that lurking behind their OMG I'M SO FUCKING CUTE LOOK AT ME AND LOVE ME TIL YOU DIE facades. In fact, I'd say probably most people like that have something really awful in their past that you just don't know about. It's best to just let them do their thing off in their own weird little worlds until they are good and ready to address their demons.
omg thats horrible thing to happen to her o.o well understand on that point of view if thats why she is using bases for. But it still not helping herself even if it is in someway by getting attention. But you are right they should just do their own thing if its all cuz of their past. It sucks that there are people who have been hurt so badly like that.
or fair to any other artist, either, because it's pretty easy to spot like at least a mile away when somebody uses dolls or other bases. (ie. they have about 9000 recolors of the same thing)
Is it sad that I have no clue what you guys are even talking about? I had to read a few comments before I realized you weren't talking about references. Sorry, I quit visiting the internet art communities years ago so now I'm new and to lazy to use google art work.
So the real question is, is using bases fair or unfair to other artist who don't use it?
(and especially since the ones who do use bases end up in front page)
Opinions are appreciated
No fighting though okay? lol just wondering xD
