Starting With Backgrounds

I'm a young artist with years of practice still ahead of her, so I still need some help in some areas.

Right now I've been feeling like starting up how to draw environments, especially cities. Any tips or places to go to help me start out?

Thanks.

When drawing backgrounds start off by remembering when you're dealing with natural objects, neatness is not required. Start rough, work your way down until you hit the precise points. That seems to work well for me.

rather than caring about having perfect perspective the first time around, do a quick gesture drawing of the area first.

Draw what you see around you. It sounds so basic, but it's true. And one of the best ways to learn. So, set up in a coffee shop or somewhere else where you can sit for a while, and draw the street outside. Take your time, make sure you really look and draw what you see, not what you assume you see.

That sounds so simple yet so creative. I'll have to tackle that when I get the chance, thanks.

Once you get over the initial frustration, it's a lot of fun too. Another fun (but time-consuming and difficult one) is to visit a garden and draw a scene there. So many different shapes and textures to be had. It'll kill you, but it's amazing practice.

Make the chance.
Get a sketchbook asap and take it with you everywhere, and fill it with sketches daily.
