I want to draw webcomics and work on games but there are also people sending PMs, asking for art commissions.
Do I do one thing at a time or try to do everything at once? For example, do I take a game development job and put commissions on hold,
Or do I try and cram in commissions in between game development whenever I can?
Is it better to do multiple projects at a time or is it wiser to not overestimate myself?
I notice that any famous cartoonists or artists with their own art gallery will rarely update and only upload preview images of their current projects.
I say you follow your own pace, since there are people in the world who have an extremely fast-paced rate of work thus making them able to take on multiple project simultaneously. Some others don't have that kind of marvel, so taking it easy is also an option.
I'm actually glad you asked this as i admit i've been a bit worried about ya over the years concerning just this subject (sorry cheesy as that sounds; i worry about everything so can't help it ).
The key i'd vote is to never do something because you feel you have to; you should do what you wish to do out of the choices you have, and if you don't want to do something at that point then so be it; your a human with (amazing, IMO) dreams, not an art vending machine. Multiple projects are certainly okay (god i'd be shocked to find any artist in the industry that doesen't), but if you start to feel you have to many on the go than certainly consider freezing or aborting some so you can focus on whatever you feel a preference towards; you will likely find yourself 'in the mood' at times for doing this or doing that, so go with those flows and you'll find yourself naturally drifting towards a specific ratio and projects at different times. Your art (and it's speed) will benefit i imagine if your doing what and when you want (including taking breaks of course; a good run or ponder does wonders i find).
And for the record, personal projects (inc. webcomics/games/art you fancy doing) should ALWAYS take precedence over comissions. Speaking as someone who has himself asked about comissioning you in the past, i would never expect you to slave away the moment you've accepted it; save it for when you feel like drawing it and only work on it when you want, even if that is three years down the line, only touching it on and off for ten minute periods! We haven't paid you for them, and no one is going to die if you don't get them done within a timeframe or have to cancel them for whatever reason. Were we industry bosses giving you paid work with deadlines then it would be different of course, but were not so we can wait.
Hope that provides some guidance for ya. PS: Anyway, we're fans. We like your webcomics/games! Go forth and do!
It's not abnormal. But in your case I would go with the job over the commissions, as I assume it's more lucrative, then see if it's plausible to fit in whatever smaller commissions you can handle. Be realistic about your ability to handle work loads and retain quality and focus. Some people thrive on constantly working and do well under that kind of stress, some prefer to put the bulk of their focus in one thing at a time. Just depends on your temperament and style of working.
job first, commission can wait another time. commission should be their when you need the money or feel like opening a commission then go ahead but at of your free will
