I know, stupid question. I thought I knew what an OC is. I assumed original character met original character. But recently I saw some peeps on the site who seemed to strongly imply that an OC is always based on pre existing series, settings, or universes, instead of being something completely original from an original setting, like a comic project I would like to get off the ground eventually. This is kind of freaking me out, because if what these fellows are saying is true, then I have been submitting my work to the wrong groups.
OC (abbrev.) - noun. 1. A term used by adolescent dA anime artists to describe their characters which are loosely based on non-public domain characters. 2. A character creation often based off of using avatars from Gaia or online dolls which can lead to major dArama when posts something which remotely looks like them. 3. Original Character.
OC's just a term used to describe a character you made up. Whether it may be a fan character, or just an original character all together.
Don't worry about the whole OC group thing. I post my stuff into that all the time, and I haven't gotten in trouble for it yet. It's because OCs are just original characters in general.
The term "OC" doesn't specify the setting. If a group doesn't explicitly say whether they want an original setting or not then I wouldn't worry about it. Especially if they have been accepting your work.
