Art school?

I'm going through a bit of a problem. I don't know if I want to go to school for art. People tell me two different things:

1.Go to school for something you enjoy doing
2. Go to school for something that will make you money.

I graduated in 2011 and took a year off just to get my mind straightened out, to work and make some money. Now it's almost time to sign up for school again and I have no idea what I want to do.

It's something I love doing, I've been involved with art for most of my life. I just don't know if I want to go to school for it. I heard there's no money in art because it's such a competitive field.

If I were to go to school for art it would be for illustration. I want to work with digital painting. Problem is, I don't know how I would make decent money off of that or if there's a chance i'll actually make any money at all. I know nothing at all when it comes to careers in art.

If you are thoroughly passionate about it, constantly think about it and are generally a creative person, then go for it, and if you are and be ambitious, then lots of money can be made with it.

There is money in art if you know where to look. Look for gigs on sights like deviantart/other reliable websites in your line of work. Yes, art is a competative field which is why people go to art school, however you do not need to go to art school to be good at art. You got to art school to get credentials and build your portfolio and networks. I don't believe you necessarily need a fancy art degree to find a career in art.

I agree with Omega-Werewolf, if you have any doubt about going to art school, don't and go into a different field...

" I know nothing at all when it comes to careers in art."

You've had a whole year to research the topic!!

"I heard there's no money in art because it's such a competitive field."

That means you're not meant to be in that field. If you really wanted to be in a certain field you would have the hunger and desire to get there no matter what. You would have researched the field(s) you like the most over the past several months, you would have investigated/contacted the various schools you had access to.

Find a job you can do that helps pay the bills until you know what you want to do with yourself. That way you're not stuck paying off student loans and such for an education you can't use.

I haven't graduated yet but I've been feeling the same. I hear from some that, 'you won't make it with just art. You need something else'. If anything, you could do both. Go to school for something that will make you money with a side job as an artist. Kinda like secret identity as a superhero... Or go to school in art and minor in something else like business... I hear that works.
