Recommended site for selling your original artwork (Fine art-Contemporary)

:iconbabycalliope:
Hi,

Can anyone recommend sites for selling artwork on that you or someone you know has been successful with? I have tried ebay in the past, but am researching other options. I would be selling original works, not prints. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,
I haven't used any of those 4 sites myself. I do some freelance work through community forums and sites such as Elance, Freelancer, oDesk etc.

Here's my big list of gallery sites, forums, shop sites and freelance sites: [link]

Wow, very resourceful. Not trying to be pushy, but how is doing work through community forums working for you? . I have a lot of undergrad work that does not relate to anything i'm working on currently, and would like to sell. Thanks again for your help.

I don't generally sell works that I've already made so my experience may be a bit of a different animal. Usually I look for job descriptions that are a good fit for my style and I create the work to fit the job. I do occasionally find good jobs on forums (mostly book illustrations or website graphics or portraits, but more of my work comes from the freelancing sites and repeat business from various customers.

Work that I do on my own usually just becomes a portfolio piece so I try to do personal work that I think will make my portfolio more appealing to potential clients. Things that were my better work a few years ago gradually find themselves replaced by newer works in my portfolio.

In a perfect world we could sell everything we make, but I think there is an ongoing self-education process for artists as we learn to identify what will sell and who will buy it. That applies to art we have already made as well as choices we will make about our work in the future. Some pieces will not sell but they are still the building blocks to our future successes.

Well said and understood. I am unfortunately trying to relieve my work space of, like I said, undergrad work. Perhaps my best option at present is to remove the work from the stretcher bars, reusing the stretchers, and rolling up old work. Thanks again for your input.
