I have a question about the deviantart search. I noticed it when I was looking through the search term 'scarfblob'. In the first three pages, I knew that some of the art orders didn't seem right. I saw mediocre art come before really good art... (ie. sketches before fully colored art done by popular artists). I was wondering how the ordering system under the searches works? I know it has something to do with favorites, but even some pieces with lower favorites come before ones with higher favorites.
I would just like to understand how it works.

There was a lot of drama about this back in the day - so if you search through #hq journals you can find out more about the development of the search function.

The search algorithms they use are based on a variety of different variables (with a twofold goal of showing users really great art as well as giving exposure to pieces that haven't had very much). This journal seems most relevant to the current search - [Popular Results for Browse]. Also if you go through #dt you might be able to find some technical information about how they implement it.

upon looking at it again, I think its a mixture of favorites, views, downloads, and comments. I just looked at these : [link] [link] and I noticed what stood out most in the stats is that the green one had more comments despite having less favorites. Maybe its a total number of all of the above...? ._.

Yeah, it's probably some wierd algorithm that combines all those.
(I've never heard of scarfblobs before. They're so cute!)
