What's the deal with 'favorites'?

I get that when I go to an artwork, if I like it, I can 'favorite' it and then other users can see what I've chosen as favorites. The main reason I favorite is so that I can refer back to that artist. So I haven't gone overboard with choosing favorites, I've really only chosen the stuff I really think is great.

Having said that, it didn't take me long to notice that, about half the time I post a new drawing, someone will favorite it almost immediately. But after that first minute that it's posted, it's very unlikely that anyone else will favorite or comment on it.

And I think I've figured out that this is because, when you first post something, it spends a few seconds on the MAIN deviantart site, so a few people will see it right then.

But sometimes I'll notice that even within a few minutes of posting a new work, I'll look at someones favorites and see that it's already buried under several other favorites...does this mean that a lot of people just sit there refreshing that main page and favoriting as many newly posted works as possible? If so, what is the point of this?

I'm just trying to learn more about networking on here, and favoriting is something that I find somewhat puzzling so far so I was just looking for an overview. Thanks in advance for any insight you can give me!

I found that networking is actually very difficult on here now. The problem is that the community is too huge and there really is no way to organize or segregate the community to your preference. Personally i'd like to find people similar to my skill level or those interested in actual networking. I know there are clubs and stuff but it just seems ridiculous that I can't weed out all the crap or even all the joke postings to find serious artist.
As far as favorites go it all comes down to honesty and in most sites like tumblr or facebook or any of the like, honesty would seem very arbitrary: however in an art community you would think honesty would be the most important. the younger members throw off the value of the favs with their shameful popularity contest and it shows because they're not very honesty just like their artwork isn't very honest or full of heart. people always tell me on here that comments and favs shouldn't matter on here but thats not whats wrong. It's that there are no connections being made with these tools especially seeing that these are what they are for, making connections and networks. That's what I think the OP was trying to get at. At least I think.

As far as I'm concerned, Favorites are free source material. If I see something that blows me away and if I think achieving that level of skill will be a natural progression of my style then Ill favorite the hell out of this site. All the cool stuff I see gets loaded onto my hard drive. I 'slide show' it from time to time with some of my pics added in for self critiquing purposes. I get a buzz out of being part of a huge skill base that's pretty much unknown and underrated.

Plus, when you Fav someones art, it gives them a warm fuzzy, someone digs their work and that's got to be good for something.

I am suddenly filled with so much doubt... everyone's saying that people only fav for my page views when I thank them... I really appreciated all of the favorites I got, but now I feel like I can't appreciate the one or two immediate ones after I upload... How does one get their art viewed then? It has always kind of bothered me that I get favorites but barely anyone takes the time to comment...

people shouldn't fav for the sake of thanking anyone, People should fav you for your work, the effort you put in and stuff. obviously the favorite thing is rigged. I'm getting better in my art but at the same time i have a shitty suicune stock picture that has 244 favorites and apparently that's it nothing beyond or surpassing that number and i have to drown my art in 30+ clubs in order to get views and favs while another person can have the same thing and only sub into 3-4 clubs and its instantly flooded with favs and comments. I just don't get it really.

ya, I here you OP. I have that happen to me quite a lot. in fact, so much so, that I know what kinds of things I've made that people really honestly enjoy and fav, and other stuff, well... I think it just gets fav bombed and then that's it. my piece(s) then become a barren waist land just taking up room on the site afterwards. with 5 or less favs and so forth for months on end.
It's sort of the same with watchers as well. people watch you, and then you NEVER seriously see them fav your future works. or they fav a few, watch you, then they pretty much dissapear from your life.

All of this however, does not bother me. It's something I have grown to know from observation(s). honestly, it's nothing I worry about.

I fav things very very scarcely. but I fav because I legitimately like something. and most of the time I will comment as well.

Well, in regards to watchers not faving. I NEVER fav someone I watch. I might comment, but I won't fav. The reason I'm watching is because I like most of their work, it's redundant to fav afterwards IMO.

Getting a few favs on any newly posted work is just.. what happens on this site. It's more likely in some galleries than others. They're usually fav-bombers who do it to lure you to their own page, I assume so they can increase their own pageview stats. It's not MUCH of a point, is it?

Lots of people fav so that they themselves get recognized more. Because when you fave someone's work they usually come to your page and thank you. These people just go to the main page and drag to their fav list randomly. Their pages are filled with thankyou's. More than once I would find that I've had 2 faves and zero views on a deviation because the person doesn't even bother to actually click the deviation, he just drags and drops into his fav in hopes that I would come thank him and look at HIS things.
I personally fave for the same reasons as you. I only fave what I REALLY like and things that people have made for me.
My fav list is sacred ;u;

Yeah, even though I love favs, it feels a tad less special when I can't even find my own work in their fav-folder just seconds after they added it.
