Im in a bad situation. I have a deadline not enough time to redraw and i need this finished.
I tried something new with pastels thinking it would work everything is explained in the link.
Anyway. How do i salvage this? Tips? Pointers? I think when i do the pile and show the flames coming up things will pull together. But that's just wishful thinking -_-.
This is my first experience with pastels i have never used them before. I have done oil pastels before though.
Chalk pastels are tough, mine always come out too blurry. Some things I can suggest that I've experimented with: Blue tape to mask areas and create sharper edges, after you lay down the pastel spray on workable fixative, then remove the masking tape to work on the remaining areas. The fixative might work well to add other colors to your flames. Give it a test on a separate sheet and see how you like it. I like inking my chalk pastels to sharpen edges. I usually do this after applying workable fixative so as to not get pastel chalk on my pen tip. This might work well with your pile of matches. I also like to paint on india ink for black backgrounds. It give heavy contrast and the ink lets you make really sharp edges. Lastly (I know someone suggested this a bit) you can always use an image editor to paint on the colors. GIMP is free, pretty simple to use, and might help, but without experience in a digital painting program, the learning curve might be an issue. Oh and you can apply more pastel over the ink to soften the ink lines if you want. Best of luck, let me know how it works out.
I think im gonna go buy some fixative at michaels or ac moore when i get my canvas for my painting and paints. Then some masking tape. Sounds like a good idea.
The india ink and all that stuff will be a last resort. I honestly want the pastels to show and nothing but pastels. I dont even like the fact of my pencil strokes showing. But that is something i will live with.
Thanks for the pointers and ideas they are very useful.
The fixative my also allow you to layer the pastel on thicker so those pencil lines don't show so much. Test it out on some scrap. The fixative (krylon at least) dries in about 15 minutes.
I hope so because the yellow i am using for the stick part of the matches is really bland, hopefully the layering with fixatives will help it really stand out.
