Why is this happening?

I first joined dA 6-7 months ago, I thought It was a really great site that all artists or the guys who were just seeking for suggestions and critic on their works, As time gone by, I started getting that in dA it does not mean who is the real artist, But who is the more friendly, I've seen many people who deserve something more than being in Front page, But they can't get to it, Cause people keep liking things that they should not be in the first page, I can do some refers at this topic maybe in the future or tomorrow. Not sure If I can (because It will seems like I am trying to show their artwork). Anyway the topic is that someone creates something good, Or he is way friendly and He has some talent, then He gets on front page, making him to have Hundreds or Thousands of watchers, then He just keeps doing worse than his old job, making him to enter the first page again and again, unable to show other people who really deserve to be there in the first place. I just don't understand why a ponny should be (no offense, But you can't compare a 1 hour artwork that gets on first page with a 1 day artwork that gets a few comments...) on the first page instead of a realistick stunning artwork? I think dA has started getting on cliqs, very few can still make it, All people seem to go in where everyone goes, And to be honest, I am sure that if we do an experiment, and someone really poor (not extremely poor) uploads something, he will get 1-2 faves. maybe a comment, but if the person who constantly gets on first page uploads it (Exact same) He will get lods of comments and faves, Maybe new watchers..

Isn't that unfair? I have 3-4 people in my mind right now that they deserve much more from what they get

Regards

Art-work is sometimes more about the popularity of the topic then the quality of the art-work.

I agree with that...I've seen so many incredible artists getting lost in the pages with a fav or 2 when they deserve much much more...
But I think the best you can do is simply share what you like...share their work with your friends or link to them on your Facebook...if you think it's worth sharing, share it!

If others agree (and perhaps have a DA account) they'll share it too...and so on :)

well you know the front page doesn't have to be the center of the universe

yea, totally agree. but... unfortunately that's how this and most art communities work anyways =/
many mediocre work does seem to get ddailydevs, and tho i'm just assuming, i think its prob b/c they're already popular or they're friendly.

Actually there was a lot of discussion about this topic recently. I don't know if there's a recipe on how to get popular. There's no chance, that everyone who deserves it can get to the front page. There simply isn't enough space for it.
But I don't believe it all depends on skills. Like you said - the bigger the fanbase, the more favourites you get, simply because more people who are interested in your art actually SEE your artwork.
But how to build that fanbase?
I believe it depends alot on luck, self promoting and having watchers who promote you, too, in some way. Joining groups, contributing art, commenting, faving and so forth. And of course some skills are required - wether they're technical skills, a great idea and/or imagination or conveying an deep thought about an important topic. Or just being funny - whatever.
A great "popularity magnet" is fanart, for example. Draw fanart and suddenly people will notice you because they look for something they fancy over. I guess it's harder to get people interested in stuff (original artwork) they don't even know, until they see it in your gallery than getting them to notice you through something they look for and allready are aware of it. If you're lucky, they'll notice your original arts, too.

Well I could go on with this further and further but I guess I made my point clear. Luck, promoting and something that attracts people or lure them to you. But it's unfair, you're totally right. The only possibility is to keep on trying and perhaps you'll get rewarded someday (:
Or the other artists, you were talking about - this comment is meant in a more general way.

Exactly like that, I had a conversation with someone after I made the thread, and I had to agree that dA is totally not the site to look for suggestions, You have to take some watchers first and then You will be able to do it..But till then...If you dont draw a "fanarty" thing, then You will probably do nothing with the watchers. Keep trying and improving is the only possible solution, and I no matter what, I've learnt in life that If You want something very much, You will eventually take it..If You dream for it all day :).

Well I was about to rage and stuff till I saw Or the other artists, you were talking about - this comment is meant in a more general way. so Yes, Pretty much I feel more for other artists, Personally I dont care If I have 1,10,100,200,500 or 1000 + I just need people to comment and care for my artwork, see it and tell their recomendations..Just that C: That was my purpose when I first joined dA :) (and still be, If I will have watchers..pff who cares..but if there are 10 or even more people suggesting..truly suggesting..then thats what I want..a HARD critique and suggestions)

I completely agree with you =) Hope dies last, doesn't it ^^

"Well I was about to rage and stuff till I saw [..] "

I'm sorry, when I expressed myself in a wrong way. I know you haven't opened this thread to complain about you not being popular, I understood that. But I'm not too keen with english language, so please forgive me, if I made you get the wrong impression of what I wanted to say ^^' I didn't mean to offend you =)

And about watchers - I also agree with you. Critique is what helps you to become better and of course suggestions. I want to improve my art, so I need to know what other people think I should improve. It's not like I'm not seeing enough failures in my own art, but hearing an other person's point of view is always helpful. Accepting this view oder agreeing with it - it's still your own choice.
And, honestly spoken, being popular, as so many complain about not being popular, doesn't mean that you get more or less critique and suggestions. Actually, reading through comments on popular pieces of art ... to me those comments wouldn't help me at all to improve xD' So I'm quite happy with a little fanbase, but having people who are really looking at my art and enjoying it than having a bunch of watchers who's only comment is "WOW!" or "Amazing." or "That's crap" ^.^

Yeah exactly, watchers that will say "That hand is so strange, so big , try drawing the shadows more so it will look better" (<-- does not even make sense nvm xP) and not "its good :) " I mean, I only need people who will say their honest opinion about my artwork :) if they think Its shit..then I would accept it ^^ I pretty much (A lot of hell prefer) prefer people who will actually care, and will help me...If there are fanpages about me, and I dont work at all but I get millions of fans..someday all of those fans will go away, and I will be like "But I was so great at drawing, where everybody gone" forcing my self to take pills..well I absolutely prefer people who actually care :) who will say "This kid has some skill, lets help him develop it more.
