Clipping Mask issues...or maybe I'm doing it wrong

I want to paste an image into a shape I've made in Adobe Illustrator. I've tried to use the clipping mask method but it says I only have one thing selected. I have the layer with the shape on it and the layer with the image I want to 'paste into' it.

Please, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mask are black and white. Black hides and white shows. If you just add a mask to something, you can draw or fill areas with black to hide it, and you can do the same with white to show it.

If you have an area selected before you add a mask it will show everything that was selected. You should be able to see the black and white areas of the mask in the thumbnail for layers.

In Photoshop 2.5 if you wanted to paste into a selected area, you just select Edit/Paste Into. That function is still in Photoshop so I'm sure it is in Illustrator.
